Engine Number Location

Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:48 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi gang,

Newbie here. Coming to terms with my MC28. Was wondering where the engine number might be stamped on the cases (didn't immediately spot it) and if there should be any relationship between this and the VIN itself?

Also, can anyone decode the VIN to help me identify model specifics etc.?

I'm just curious.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

The engine number is located to the left of the oil cap on the clutch side of the engine.

They all* start MC16E and have no relation to the model number.

And no, the VIN number isn't much help in identifying the original model (i.e. R, SE or SP), the best clue it a sticker on the subframe, it should have a model code on which can be matched up to the front page of the mc28 paers manual that you can find in the links on the left hand side of this page.

*Andy, Steve, Matt, Roy, Dan let it go, just leave it.

Thanks for your help. Sure enough I went and took a closer look and there it was clear as a bell. In typical Honda fashion logically placed. Funny because I tried looking everywhere and didn't see it before. That's even where I recall it being on other Hondas come to think of it.

Now you got me curious about the "*".

PS: I'll always try the search engine first, but expect a few dumb questions as I sort this bike out.

Re: *

Not all engine cases are marked MC16E. There are special HRC cases that are either unmarked or stamped with a different code... Fontyyy just gets wound up because they are rare and doesn't have any! Laughing

How does this grab ya? My 21 seems to have a letter instead of a number, whats the meaning behind this?

MC16E-##22S4#

-Its not a 5 or an 8, just had another look, could be a broken 3.. Does anyone have a 3 in their code that kinda looks like an S..
