MC16 Electrics, cdi's ignition restrictions etc?

Followinng on from rdstars topic, Andy made this statement;

Andy wrote:MC18 barrels & heads, carbs, and exhausts are all huge upgrades for the MC16. Although they may not deliver 62~63hp like they do on a delimited MC18, they will still push a '16 into the (very) high 50's if carefully set up. Electronics are likely to be the most limiting factor, plus the standard crankcases on the '16 leave a lot to be desired. You can't (easily) fit later cases, but if you buy some and take a look inside you will soon see how to improve the early ones and make up those few extra horses.

I have wondered about the electronics on the '16's before as regard to the tuning of the engines, will the stock ignition be a brick wall above 50hp? Cases I'll be looking at modifying if needed, I do have a set of '18 cases lying around to copy.

Anyone had hassles with the ignition system on an mc16 whilst tuning?

Cheers

Whilst I can't answer the real question, I'd say that junking the 16 electrics in favour of at least a PGMII is probably the way to go.

The 16 CDI's may be ok but I don't know the timing curves.

Sure it wouldn't take too much to fit the stator and flywheel off an MC18 to get the PGMII running.

Or fit an aftermarket CDI if you're looking for big mojo.
