I need your opinion

Tue Dec 01, 2009 7:31 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey guys, am looking at buying an NSR at the moment and an MC28 has just shown up for sale in New Zealand on trademe. When I first saw it I got all excited but now slightly less so because it's a bit rough. And I just noticed that the fairings are a bit mismatched.... I think. Here's a link to the auction:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-257368252.htm

Is it just me or does it look like the tail section of the fairings is from the other SE released in 1996?

Also looks like the mirrors aren't the factory ones.

Cheers
Tom

Yeah the mirrors aren't standard, the passenger foot pegs have been replaced with some home made aluminium exhaust hangers and the rider's footpegs, hangers and foot controls are not standard. Shame about the fairing damage but that's only cosmetic. It looks better than the two MC21s listed on trademe at the moment - they've been on there for AGES now.

I say go and fetch it bro.

Do you think it's worth 6k even with all the cosmetic issues? I had a chat to the owner tonight, seems like a good guy, and sounds like the bike is in good condition. And MC28s are really cool!

If $NZ6k is the equivalent of £2000, then yes it's worth every penny.

its equivalent to £2600ish - which is about the going rate i think(?) - depends how much the fairing damage breaks your heart. If its mechanically good then do it - just use the broken plastics and lack of pillion pegs etc as bargaining leverage to haggle him down.

I was thinking exactly the same as Dave... it's about £600 over-priced! Wink

Hello Tom,

As I said in my email it's a wee bit dear. Remember I paid $6k for my Repsol 28sp (with Repsol leathers) and even though the guy probably let me have it a bit cheap it is a useful benchmark.

I sold a set of genuine mirrors yesterday! as I had a new set arrive monday.... bummer.

It's a tough call as you won't see many 28's for sale in NZ and especially not an SE or SP and on further reflection I would probably go to $5k on this one if it checked out mechanically.

Keep us posted buddy and don't worry about the 21/28 'lemon picture' debate homos on here - buy what you like.

I havn't been passed by a 21 yet!

$6k sounds like a really good price for the Repsol Joe.

While $6k does seem like too much for this 28SE they just don't show up very often and it's exactly what I want. I had a chat to the owner last night and he said it runs sweet and that he did a trip from Masterton up to Rotorua and back and it ran perfectly.

Will keep you posted.

I also have a few general questions about the MC28s. With the card ignition, are the cards bike specific? Or could anyone with a card walk up to any MC28 and take off?

Also this might seem like a stupid question but what's the warm up procedure for an NSR? My last bike was a CBR and it was just a matter of push the button and let it idle for a bit before you take off. And obviously gradually increase the revs as the engine warms up.

Cheers!

start it and ride away - just keep the revs low (under 6K) and use only smaller throttle openings until the temp guage needle gets up to about 60 degrees. After which its all good to thrash.

And what's this about the MC28 being a lemon? I don't want any smart arse comments, just the facts.

There's plenty on the Main Site and the Forum. Please do some reading and some searching, else we tend to get a bit ratty! There's pretty much NOTHING you can't find if you take the time to look, and people will be a lot more helpful (some may even bend over backwards!) if you take a bit of time to do some research yourself.

Just searching for lemon will bring up a page of results for you to skim over.

Get used to it. For some reason a FEW of the 18/21 owners have a real chip on their shoulders and seem to think it's funny/fun to run down other peoples pride and joy. A bit sad really.

They also seem to think that a bikes worth is solely defined by the horse power it produces. More than a bit ignorant in my opinion but they are entitled to their opinion.

I have not been able to figure out why, but a bit of advise. They can give it but they can't take it so just ignore it as there is some pretty useful information on the site and lots to enjoy otherwise.

Oh and you can ask me all the newbie questions you like...

Tom, Ring me asap as I have found an MC28 for you! $5k or near offer and it's a minter I'm told. Owner has already left NZ so must be sold asap. Sounds like you could get it for a really good price. Cheers Joe
