Best road tyres for the NSR (mc21)

Thu Feb 04, 2010 2:24 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi, Just a quick question; what are the best road tyres to use on a standard MC21. I'm thinking of buying a new set for the spring.

Cheers for any advise Smile

Best road tyres for nsr

A lot depends on what you want out of your tyres, ie, longevity, performance, what sort of a rider you are, do you want to do the odd track day, its all down to your own preference. I personally like Dunlop D209GP,plenty of grip and if your not gonna pile the miles on too much, reasonable wear

Thanks guys. My riding style is fast road. I'm at home on the Welsh twisties. Not bothered about having high mileage tyres, I just want good all-round grip both in the dry and the wet; it rains a lot in Wales!

I've not done any track days yet but I could be tempted on the NSR in the future. It feels a great little bike!

Cheers

In the rain BT090's of all the normal tyres are (IMHO) by far the best, good enough for knee down antics in the rain on track.

If you can either tollerate a 120 tyre on a 3" rim or find a 3.5" (CBR400, RVF400, VFR400 and others) then Maxxis Goldspeed road legal inters are superb in wet/damp/greasy conditions, as good as anything else in the dry and last longer than you might think.

Depending on how much you like burning money, their race wet's, inters and cut slicks are all road legal. Though as they're race compounds I wouldn't like to bet on the lifespan.

I like the sound of the BT090's. I'll probably go with them so thanks for the advise! There are some sets on flea-bay for around the 170 mark which seems like a good price.

I currently have Dunlop GPR80's on and I don't trust them when cranked over, plus I have no idea how old they are. They could have ben on the bike for years! Confused

I might be a little late on this one...I run Mich pilot powers. Good grip in dry conditions but can't say about wet.

I wouldn't go for the goldspeeds.

On the old Visordown supermoto forum we knew them as ditchfinders. If you want that type of tyre then try the Avon pro extreme rain.

Got bridgstones on my 28, local Honda dealer who is also an ex racer and NSR rider said they are the best all rounders and are designed for the lighter bikes.

I only ride in the dry though so cant comment on wet grip.

I'm going to order the BT090's next week. Read lots of good review on these both in the wet and the dry. They sound just right.

Here's the wording from Bridgestone:

Battlax BT-090

Introducing the new BT090 for middle-size bikes. Refined by using the latest technologies from Bridgestone, the BT-090 is perfect for aggressive riding on both circuits and streets. The rigidity of the tyre induces better contact feel in corners, especially for slide control during races. The new compound and pattern offer improved grip and handling in both wet and dry conditions, with better high-speed stability and anti-shimmy performance ensuring a smooth ride.

TECHNICAL INDEX

Compound

High grip compound for middle-size class motorcycles. Maintains high grip level from start to finish regardless of the temperature.

Pattern

New pattern optimises both vertical and horizontal rigidity of the tyre. Less grooves on the tread edge allow for better dry grip and machine control in corners, and more grooves in the centre area leads to better wet performance.

Profile and Pattern effect

Higher rigidity in sidewall area increases grip in corners. Better slide control for easier "line" tracing. Improved high-speed stability and anti-shimmy for better street-riding performance.

Construction

MSB Kevlar in rear
