How much exhaust residue is "normal"

Mon Apr 12, 2010 3:17 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I am still trying to get my jetting dialed in after swapping the stock exhaust for Tygas. Everything seems to be running fine, except for a fair amount of spooge out the exhaust cans. It doesn't seem overly rich when riding, and I didn't notice a whole lot with the stock system. How much would be considered normal on a properly jetted machine? Thanks in advance.

Is your 'non-stock' exhaust / chambers brand new or have they been used before?

The reason I ask is because if the pipes have been used before, Excess oil can build up over time in the chambers, which if not drained or removed, will gradually emerge from the cans (or the manifold joint) when the engine is running.

Even on a perfectly set up 2 stroke, the oil coming in with the fuel (or injected separately) is never burnt 100% completely during each combustion cycle and this oil will move into the pipes.

It then has to come out somewhere.

The exhaust and cans are new. It was never this bad on my old race bike (12 years ago, dogfights, premix), but the current bike runs fine (Tygas, oil pump). I was considering dropping the mains down after a plug test. At least it isn't like my old TZR that had a float problem, and I was able to give riders directly behind me a cold shower at the start of a ride.

It is definitely not that clean, Fontyyy. Looks like my weekend project will be jet swapping. The plugs are on the blacker side as well, not to mention my car gets better mileage.

Make sure the oil pump is set correctly. It may not even be a jetting issue. The pumps often tend to over-oil in my opinion, probably in the interests of standard longevity.
