NSR-150 getting AWFUL gas mileage

Fri Aug 13, 2010 1:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I recently bought my first motorcyle, a '97 NSR-150. So far I'm very happy with the bike except for one thing...the gas mileage is terrible!

The tank is about 10.5 Litres, which only gets me around 75KM. My driving is normally city driving so there is a fair amount of stop and go, but I keep the tach between 4-6K RPM and never race it.

Is the mileage supposed to be this poor??

Shocked

I have noticed that fuel vapors are escaping from the cap on top of the gas tank - there is a noticable petrol smell when you get on. The bike has previously been in a minor accident which caused part of the gas tank to be dented in about 3/4". Could this be a cause?

I also noticed a small leak today from the nozzle where you swtich from regular to reserve tanks on the side of the bike (I ran out of gas on the way to the station), but it seemed to go away once I filled up and twisted the nozzle back into "normal" position.

However, there are stains on the frame of the bike below the nozzle that were there when I got it that look like gas/oil marks.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but if anyone could advise it would be much appreciated!! Smile

Thanks for your responses guys.

I had been wondering what typical mileage these things got...it's really hard to find info on the net about them.

I'm going to take it into the shop and let them check it out really soon.

Do you think vapors escaping through the gas cap would be a major contributor to something like this? I know that a loose/missing cap in modern cars can trigger the "check engine" type of light, but I thought it was more because of pollution.

Cheers

Don't mess about with a fuel leak mate - your man-berries could meet a very painful and fiery end.

See if you can find a good 2nd hand tank on ebay. then replace all your fuel lines as well.

Please don't take this the wrong way.
Why the hell did you buy a 2 stroke if you never take it over 6k rpm?
That is what these bikes are designed for and where all the fun begins.
Most of us try our best (on the road, trying not to break the law too much) to keep the revs above 6K rpm.

Probably because he's too busy watching out for homicidal taxi drivers, homicidal truck drivers, homicidal coach drivers, homicidal pickup drivers, homicidal tuk tuks... and suicidal stray dogs! Shocked

Have you ever ridden a bike in Thailand?! Laughing

I've taken it over 6K RPM plenty of times...the power band doesn't start till around 7...which is f'n fun to ride!...just haven't driven fast since I realized gas was becoming such an issue.

And yes what Andy said is true also...along with the rains it's exhilarating enough dodging all the crazies! : )

So it can be pretty dangerous too? I tightened the piece where it looked like the majority of the leak was coming from, and so far I've gone about 40KM since my last fill up without the needle budging. There is though a drop or two I can see coming out every once in a while.

However, there is is definitely residue of gas/oil all around the area, including on top of the engine. I don't know if anything else is leaking...just reluctant to take it in because I have school tomorrow and am moving Monday.

But if you guys think it's potentially dangerous too I'll take it in right away.

Thanks again for the advice!
