Tyga Light legality for NZ/Aus/UK

Tue Jan 11, 2011 3:22 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi
Has anyone successfully had their bike WOF tested in NZ or Aus with the Tyga lights - specifically the RSW haeadlights and LED tail light?

I am aware that the tail light does not have provision for number plate illumination - which is something that I can easily fix. I am more concerned about the illumination, light spread, dip, etc. The local testing station never does more than a visual of the rear (does it work?) and holds up the unit to the front of the bike and checks dip vs. full beam (does this just check light alignment and that is all?)

cheers and thanks

Simon

I had no issues getting mine through here in Victoria about 18 months ago with the RSW bodywork and lights. I picked up a small led light for the number plate and just wired that in to the rear light.

Rear Light

Tue Jan 11, 2011 7:35 am » Post: #3 » Download Post

Last year my offsider took my bike home (all of 1km) in that 1km he managed to piss off a cop, but thankfully the cop didn't get a radar lock on him.

Cop was pretty pissed and bike was looking a bit scruffy and tyres were pretty low.

Ended up getting defected and having to get the bike slipped.

Stock front so no issues there, but my Tyga tail failed due to lack of number plate illumination. I ended up getting a cheap tail light and screwing that onto my Tyga Number plate holder.

Got me passed, but even with number plate illumination the guy was pretty skeptical.

He was saying it wasn't visible enough from behind when he was standing right over it.

I tried to convince him to back up a bit because the tail angles up and I believe it is adequate from behind the bike.

I got passed with the cheap tail light so I didn't push it, but you may have problems.

This is in NSW. Other states might be more lenient.

Is there no option there to do bikes no lights? It's an easy way round any such problem in the UK.

Not a chance Fontyyy, you even get points deducted and speeding fines for being 3kph over the limit, regardless of the speed limit zone you're in. After 10 years here that is still the hard one to get use to Confused

Headlights are mandatory at all times for motorcycles in New Zealand now.
Any one wanting to reduce their chance of getting wiped out by a cage should have their headlight on all the time anyway.

Oh

The other thing I was missing with the Tyga setup was a rear reflector.

This was pointed out and was a part of the cheapy light I bought.

Definitely required in NSW at least.

Yep, the rear light above the number plate, and a rear reflector are all part of the ADR requirements here.
