Finally got a chance to look over this new to me MC18 PGM2, bike started but ran like crap so I took the carbs out, cleaned the tank, etc and now about to put it all back together.
First thing I need is the reed valve gasket, broke mine when I pulled them out, also while at it should I replace them? one thing I noticed was some bubbling from the reeds when I picked the bike over with carbs removed. They don't look broken and appear stock to my untrained eye. Question is where can I get a gasket (I'm in US) and reed valves (if I need them? Do I? How do I test them?)
Carbs were messed up, both emulsion tubes were loose, one simply fell out once I removed the bowl, I guess that's why it ran like crap! Again the question is where to get the parts, what parts should I get? I understand that Japan is not an option at the moment, they have their hands full without me pestering them (I have friends there)
Should I change Main jets? currently 128 and bike appears to be restricted, did not see any signs of wire splice. Will derestrict once I can get the rest sorted out, will be keeping stock pipes on it.
TYGA performance and the evil auction house that can't be named are two good plaes to start looking.
If you are dodgy, the reeds gasket can be substituted with a thin film of gasket goo.
If an emulsion tube just fell out, I would check to make sure that the thread is still usable in both, and check the rest of the carbs to see what else is missing. Did you happen to note what model carbs you have?
Didn't know there were different models, they are stock '89 MC18 carbs, big ass flatslides.
Any way I can ID them? is there a SN?
Threads on the tubes and in the carb bodies are OK but the left one is leaking, keeps filling the crank case up with gas. Hope it was a piece of dirt cause float and needle both look perfect.
Any ideas what's the baseline jetting for the stock pipes at sea level?
Nobody will tell you jetting in the discussion section but if you post in the setup part in the members area you'll find what you need. Mc 18 carbs should be Ta21A. Look in the workshop section at the bottom under technical resources. _________________ it wouldn't be fun if it was easy!
I got it, got to pay to play, and I respect that, takes time and money to run this place, also if few bucks spent on info and advice will save me at least one re-plate I'd say it's quite a bargain!
I did pay up just had no idea about rules.
Think I got it sorted, bike is all stock so I'm just gonna do some seat of the pants tuning, like my Gamma sensei says "Let the bike talk to you"
