Ok, I sent my PGMIV off repair thinking that was the problem with my RC valves but unfortunately after having installed it today the RC valves still don't work.
The valve cables have been replaced, valves themselves pulled out and serviced, the servo works when tested seperately. Just wondered if there could be any reason why the system still doesn't function?
I sent the PGM off to 2Tracelab for repair but his testing equipment wasn't working at the time so I wonder if the repair job actually worked or if there is another issue here.
I'm probably going to buy a secondhand PGM unit & card from Jap Yahoo. Is all I need the unit & card or do I need to replace anything else?
Are the power valve cables the right way around? I've had people turn up to the dyno with them backwards or sometime not even connected! _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
I'm pretty sure they are on there right although I'll double check when I get a chance.
I think the PGM repair didn't work though, that or there is a severed cable somewhere? I can't think of another reason (although new to the NSR so don't know much) for them to not work, the fried PGM seems to be the most common problem.
Not sure how the NSR servo works, in fact I never seen an NSR up close till I bought mine, however thought I might offer some advice. Had similar problem with my RG, turned out to be a bad position sensor on a servo unit, very hard to test since it's a inductive type. New servo unit fixed the problem.
if not mistaken..here selling at $260 or $280 brand new... & a brand new CDI that comes with 2cards & keys will cost you $1300..All Singapore dollars..i bought mine last year..

Max,
Where did you get yours from? Could you supply a website?
Spoke to the mechanic who has been working on my bike earlier and he said since installing the repaired PGM the battery is draining double quick time.
I'm just gonna bite the bullet and buy a new/used PGM.
I get mine from my local parts dealer..
Not sure about the website..but you can try FJT parts Singapore..
No worries Joeking78..i bought mine a used MC28 & it need a overhaul..
Change front cylinder, piston, CDI, servo, Harness,...& it keeps going on & on.....Haiz...
Ok, we noticed something today that wasn't happening before the PGM was repaired.
Firstly the battery was draining quickly and secondly when connecting the negative terminal of the battery there is a lot of sparking. When the PGM is unplugged the sparking stops.
Hi Joe, I suppose you want to continue are troubleshooting here...
First of, I'm really sorry for the frustration and the waste of your time. I really wasn't aware of all the problems that might occur and I didn't fully understand the condition of your bike. Actually, this is why I always discourage people to post me their PGM unit if they are unsure about their bike.
My suggestion is to place the PgmIV unit aside and inspect all of the other electronic components that plugs to your wiring loom.
As you said, after the repair the rc valves still didn't work and new problems constantly keep coming through. Obviously, something is changing in the meanwhile and it's not the Pgm unit I reckon.
From what you are mentioning, you are trying to connect the battery while somehow the PGM unit is engaged aswell.
The PGM unit triggers at least three electronic relays that supply power to the rest of the wiring loom, so there is a lot of current there and sparks may occur, especially if there is a loose joint. This is not an issue of your bike, this is the norm...
As I've mentioned to you, the Pgm unit was lacking the on/ off switch that engages when the card is inserted.
Have you now fitted it to the unit?
If I remember correct, you do not have an LCD display aswell.
Do you still have the "Function" switch on the panel?
I described to you how a reg/ rec is and where you can find it.
Were you able to locate it and measure it?
If you still believe that the PGM unit is the only wrong thing with your bike, I can make you a drawing template to check that all the grounding points are correct and you do not have voltage running the earth points.
Just say so and give me a couple more hours...
By the way, I still believe that buying a second PgmIV unit right now is a really bad choice. _________________ 2t-racelab.com
The PGM unit is back on the bike and the switch is installed so that it turns on with the card. There is zero movement from the RC valve system. The valves have been cleaned and new cables installed and the servo has been removed and tested seperately and it works fine.
The function button is there on the dash and we have pressed it to reset and held it down. The LCD display is there its just 'faded' over time and no digits display on it. I cannot see if any err codes are being displayed.
I found the reg/rec but wasn't able to measure it. To be on the safe side I ordered a new one with the fins which should be here next week.
I would really appreciate any advice you have for me and if you could send that template through I could have the mechanic check it out.
What other parts could cause the rc valves not to work?
hi mate, your problem sounds like a bad earth in my opinion, your loom will have lots of looped feeds and earths on it and if one of these isnt doing its job this could be causing your problem. ive had this problem on a few of my bikes in the past but only realising after ive spent a fortune on cdi units and rectifiers. im not saying this is guaranteed to be your problem but it would be worth a look. hope it goes well for you

Thanks Peewit.
I'm off to see the bike in the morning so wil check that out. How would I sort out a bad earth connection? Just a case of cleaning?
One other thing that might be a problem...the previous owner installed different coils, they are not stock and look like Ducati 748 items. Would this be a problem?
They are not installed where Honda intended them, one is bolted onto the outside of the frame and the other is hanging above the top cylinder froma bracket.
I can't really say if 748 coils are the best choice for your bike but they sure play no role on power valve issues.
The reasons for having problems with the Rc Valves are a) the PGM unit obviously; b) problems with the servo and/ or c) a malfunctioning rectifier.
a) PGM unit :
If I remember correct, when I received your unit, I told you that everything looked fine and I wasn't able to find any problems. Though, I still changed all the electronic parts of the Rc Valve circuit... just to be on the safe side.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a month back and I've repaired quite a few Pgm units since then.
b) Servo unit ...but as you said it works fine.
I take it that it moves freely when supplied with +12V and you have measured the values of the potentiometer and the wiper with the outer lugs give a total resistance of about 5K Ohm.
c) Reg/ rec.
You already ordered a new one, so no real problems here.
The "function" switch shorts two wires when pushed.
The color of the wires are Blue - Green & Red, you should be able to find them easily on the orange fitment that comes out of the PgmIV unit and connects to the corresponding fitment of the LCD.
Please, check that the "function" switch works properly.
Do you have a "warn" light on the panel? Is it "on" or "off"?
Actually, a photo from your dashboard would be really helpful... _________________ 2t-racelab.com
