FUEL PETCOCK FOR MC-18

Sun Apr 10, 2011 12:36 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Does anyone know where I might be able to get a new fuel petcock for my '89 Terra Racing MC-18 SP? I am cleaning the fuel system as it had gas left in it for a couple years and has gunked everything up. Despite the bike having only 1800 original miles, the perfect tank has rust so I have to clean it and the petcock is a mess. I have attempted to clean it out with rust dissolver and carb cleaner and I would have taken it apart and cleaned the insides, but the face plate is riveted and I'm not sure if the internal parts are available even if I did choose to open it up. The bike is immaculate in every other way and it is a shame not to have an original petcock. Any suggestions? Idea

I also would like to find an NOS left side can, as there is a small blem on the topside of the original. A while back I asked this question of the forum and got a reply from a guy in Thailand, I believe his user name was "maximum." He said he could get new factory ones, and was getting me a price quote, but I have since lost his email address. Again, any help would be appreciated. T'hanks!

I've been told that CBR900RR will work, I ended up reusing mine but bought a filter screen from CBR900 and cut it down, just the bottom to match the length below the shoulder I think it was about $27 and came with 2 rubber rings, one that seals the tap to the tank, another that goes on the end of the brass tube.

To clean the tank I used this stuff:

before

and after

Pictures are of VF1000R tank, not NSR which was in much better shape.

I bought a 5 gallon bucket of this stuff (first pic) called "Metal Rescue" for about $100 shipped and have done couple tanks already, have few more old bikes, hope I can get at least 2 more tanks before it looses it's "juice"

It should work in 12-24 hours if temp is above 75F but here in winter it never got above 60F indoors so took a week, I was not in a hurry. I soaked the fuel tap in it as well, it seems to work well now

Thanks for the information on the petcock. I'll check with my parts guy and see what he can find out.

The corrosion inhibitor looks like it did the job well. Fortunately my tank isn't all that bad, and I think your product will clean it up nicely. Thanks again.
