MC28 fork adjuster part number?

Sun May 29, 2011 6:14 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys. I did an unbelievably stupid thing to my mates MC28sp this afternoon. Both fork adjusters were seized. I lubricated the left one and gave it a tweak and it freed up nicely. Not so lucky with the right one, the microscopic grub screw holding the blue adjuster broke and so too did the brass piece it connects to. The brass adjuster is part of a long thin aluminium rod which passes through the damper and has the valve at the tip. looking at the parts manual It looks like it is only sold with the complete damper cartridge. Can anyone confirm the part number i am after as it shows the same parts diagram for both SE and SP forks but im sure they are different? and there is no listing for the blue thumb screw??

Alternatively if anyone has a knackered set of forks with a good adjuster i would be happy to buy at the right price.

Steve

Obviously nobody has a clue what im talking about or they would have replied. The piece im after is in fact part of the damper but is easily pulled from it. so if anyone out there has a bent or rusty MC28SP fork they want to get rid of then im keen to take it from them for a bit of cash.

I rebuilt a set of 28sp forks a while ago for another forum member, they had seized the adjusters like yours and had fun and games stripping them. The alluminium fork top had corroded in the bore where the Brass adjuster goes through and caused it to seize.

I had to completely strip the adjuster assemblies and clean all the corrosion out, the blue knobs are held onto the brass adjusters with a tiny allen screw which rounded off so had to drill them out and retap them for a bigger screw.

Honda dont sell the parts seperately, you have to buy the complete damping adjustment assembly, had a quote from Lyngs Honda on these and I think they were about £150 plus vat each if they are still available to buy.

I think your options are to either get a 2nd hand one, Yahoo auctions Japan is the best place but 28SP forks fetch good money (£300 to £400) or take the broken parts to a local machine shop and get some made.

I know exactly what you're talking about and I agree, the parts manual does not list '28 SE and SP fork parts as different. It is wrong.

Hallelujah Brother!!! - that's what i thought, the pic's on the diagram look nothing like what im after. I thought i was going mad. I've got a few contacts down my part of the world looking into it for me but it appears its a NLA part that WAS expensive when available. a good old bit of unobtainium. It is completely different to the SE fork. Which is a shame as it looks like i could get one of those adjusters nice and cheap. that tiny allen key is a nightmare, must be about 1.5mm. will have to drill, tap and fit a bigger one also.

Cheers for the help guys and keep me in mind if anyone finds something.

do the SE forks have a long aluminium rod pressed onto the end of the brass adjuster with the valve on the other end? if they don't then they wont be much use. The brass bit is a different length and a different shape. its shite that you have to but the complete damper just to get the adjuster.
