Engine Rebuild & Parts Required: 1987 NSR250

Tue Jun 28, 2011 5:10 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello All,

First post for me...Day 1 of being part of this community...Thanks for letting me be part of, and Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me with my questions below!

I am in possession of a number of mid/late 80's 2 stroke race-replicas (86 NS400r, 85 RZ500, 87 RG250). I have come across a 1987 NSR250R (MC16- Blue and White). Motor needs full rebuild (top and bottom). Bike has ultra low mileage, as when the motor went, the bike sat.

My Questions are;
* How do i go about getting parts (Pistons/Rings/Gaskets/Bearings/etc)? All of the resources that I have, so far indicate, this will be very challenging to acquire these components. What chances do i have? Is there a NOS Inventory out there somewhere, that i can contact to obtain these parts? Or is it possible to cross reference with another model/year? Or is there a renowned facility that i could send the motor to, who could rebuild?
* As I am new to this bike/model (as from the research I have carried out so far, indicate this model was not exported (Japanese Domestic Market only), and therefore; how rare is it? And is this a very 'sought after/desirable" model/year?
* Finally, i also need a few other parts for the bike (brake reservoirs, front turn signals). How easy/difficult will these items be to obtain?

Thanks again for any help/guidance!

Cheers,
Vic

Hello, Vic and welcome to this forum/community.

Most of the info you are requesting is already on the forum. Just use some time to go over it. The search feature really works!

Use the 'Classifieds' forum to learn about private offers as well as 'vendors area' for supporting vendors. Do not forget the sticky 'Parts from japan...' in this discussion forum.

FWIW my understanding is only the 16 engine will fit the MC16 frame as it is rigid mounted unlike later models. I have both a 16 and a 21 but haven't tried to swap a 21 engine in. To upgrade the 16 engine, fitting MC18 bits apparently is the way to go.

Best thing you can do to learn more is get a manual from Charles here on the forum. Great source of info along with the parts manual on this site.

Tyga are a good source for consumable parts. You can use later model pistons, rings... in a 16 engine. Japan is about the only reliable source for other 16 parts tho check ebay UK ad ebay australia. Parts come up there regularly. David Silver Spares in the UK can also provide parts such as seals and M/C or calipher rebuild kits. Learn to repair plastics as 16 plastics are hard to find!
