Blow ups

Mon May 09, 2005 10:17 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Just a bit of personal research going on here...

If you have had a partial seizure or major blow up, could you add your vote and a comment i.e what happened, what were you doing and any reason for the death.

Thanks Razz

I killed the lower cylinder on Good Friday.I was running the front head mod,no.10 shortie plug,Tyga pipes and cans,RS coils and leads.I had the bike on the dyno the week before and the guy assured me it was ok.When I purchased the bike it came with a previous dynograph and info telling that it was running 155 mains. When it went pop I had to find the cause so after talking to Mr.Editor (Andy!!)I stripped the carbs to find out that the guy who had supposedly set my bike up on the dyno had not done a thing! It still had 155 mains in it so hence it was running lean.I have now put a HRC carb kit in using 185 in the front and 180 for the rear with B needle 3rd groove and #40 SJ.It is not perfect yet but feels way better.I am now going to book it in with Bob Farnham as he is only up the road from me so he can get it set up perfect.

I had the HRC lower head conversion without the 0.6mm base gasket, airbox chopped, the jetting was lean, and I was running flat out in top gear for about 10 seconds.

Heres the list:

1) top cylinder. Flat out in 5th gear. HRC card and jet kit just installed and heads shaved 0.05mm. Running older JHA pipes, Daytona filter, reed stuffers, airbox cut open. I obviously was a tad lean, which led to detonation.

2) lower cylinder. Stock head, but the piston ring lost the keeper and the ring popped out into a port. Sad to say, I have seen this happen on 2 other NSR's for no apparent reason.

I lost track after that. Somewhere in there I went to Eric Gorr's overbore for the cylinders that were damaged by seizure. Had a few issues with the Wiseco forged pistons seizing on the overbore, but I believe I have all that ironed out now.

The top 3 things that led to reliability issues for me were
1) HRC jet kit which blanked off the powerjets
2) ignition derestriction combined with shaved head running junk pump fuel
3) incorrectly "reading" the plugs on my plug chops.

Siezed the top piston when I fitted TYGA pipes without doing a rejet.

Siezed the bottom piston when I didn't rejet enough having gone from +25 degrees dry, to +8 wet at two different track days.

Yep, lower one seized, took the cylinder with it as well, riding like a fool, flat out in top. Rolling Eyes
