You want to be careful running fully synthetic with a wet transmission. Not all are compatible, and can cause clutches to slip.

Also, fully synthetic tends to be rather expensive, and a wet clutch will contaminate it quickly as it wears.

the motul is sweet from there site - Specially formulated for gearboxes with wet clutches in 2-stroke motorcycle engines,
TRANSOIL EXPERT 10W-40 delivers smoother
gear shifting under extreme and severe conditions. With the inclusion of a specific gear additive, TRANSOIL EXPERT 10W-40 provides superior clutch performance. For gearboxes without wet clutches, use GEAR 300, MOTYLGEAR or GEARBOX.
It is only $20 here in aus so not to expensive

Fully synthetic oil in a wet clutch gearbox will be fine, provided that it does not have friction modifiers added. All motorcycle specific engine and gearbox oils do not have the modifiers that cause the clutch to slip.

I recently put in genuine Honda four stroke GN4 oil in my NSR gearbox (it took 800ml). Took it for the first ride today, and the shifts are incredibly smooth. Previously I was using shell gear oil and for some reason it was very notchy.

Procedure for filling with oil - just pour it in. Put 700ml in to start with then hold the bike upright so that it is balanced and check the level with the dipstick while it is upright. You only dip the dipstick in the hole - do not screw it in. Add oil until it is filled to the top mark on the dip stick.

Resurrecting old oil thread, is it winter yet?

Manual recommends SAE 10W30 4 stroke engine oil (that's what all Honda cars run in manual trans) any reason not to run it?

Not really, but oil technology has moved on considerably since Honda specified that for the NSR 25 years ago.

Remember too, transmission losses that could be experienced with a lower quality/standard of oil will mean much more to a 60hp 2-stroke than they will to a 120hp bore-stroke.

Thanks again for advice!

Picked up 80W85 HP trans oil which is rough equivalent of 20W30 motor oil, my local Honda guy swears by it.
