Ahh yes Steve. The helical primary. That's why we really should be fitting RS straight cut gears Wink The deep groove bearings as used are not meant to take side thrust, so from an engineering view it's a silly idea. I'd rather have some noise from the gear engaging, not noise from a knackered bearing.

For fear of reserecting an old thread.

Fontyyy, you say all four of your cranks had the right hand primary main bearing gone. As I recall in the Donington pit lane you could feel the crank was shot just by feeling how much play there was in the crank by pulling on the flywheel. All those main bearings are shot not just the right hand one. When a cranks time is up its up I guess.

Moving on though and the reason for the post. While surfing pictures I noticed this. While the NXA still has a hole with a very limited pool, the 500V just has a hole. If there is a need for a pool which I doubt, it can only be for a road bike when it is assumed it will be sat for periods of time.

My theory is that the "pool" is purely for guiding the oil draining after shut down into the bearing race. So that when the bike's parked there's oil on the bearing at cold start up. And all manufacturers know that street bikes (or cars) are never warmed up prior to the dash to work.
I've never had a problem with any of my bikes by filling the pool and redrilling just the holes.
Fact is once the engine is running nothing will be draining into the pool anyway so it's just wasted space and a cause of unnecessary flow restriction.
