mc16

Hi, I do apologize if something similar has been posted.

I have an MC16 that Id love to restore. The question is, is it really worth while? I do not have any real mechanical know-how but I am prepared to give it a go.
It does seem, however, that parts are very hard to find and that no parts carried over to other models, making things even more difficult.

So, really, is it worth an attempt or save my money and begin a new project using a model with sufficiently available parts? Id hate to be mid way through a restoration only to find it practically impossible to complete properly.

Id really love to hear all opinions.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Where in oz are you? What parts are you missing or need to replace? Fwiw, other model topend engine parts do fit. I am running mc21 pistons in mine and have mc18 parts to bolt on at some point. Hardest bits for replacement are the plastics, everything else you can pretty much track down or find alternatives.

Cheers

Hi jason
It will be much more easier a restoration on a MC21 or MC28 cause Honda supply the stock parts compare to the MC16-MC18 discontinued.
The only problem on restorations of the MC21-MC28 models is that the most of the HRC parts are discontinued but if you want to rebuild a stock engine it is no problem.
If you save your money from the MC16 rebuild and buy a MC21 you will have many advantages first the stock parts are not discontinued, the bike is much nicer, with better performance and it is very common which this will help you in a restore or every repair to find some used or new parts.
Finally it is in your choice what to do,but think about all the parameters.

Im in Queensland, about 60k north of Brisbane. The bike was running when it was last ridden - 10 years ago. So the fairing etc is not too bad. The difficult part I imagine would be all th perished 'rubbers' and the like. I've started stripping the bike and now, just prior to dropping out the engine I've decided to take a step back and ask whether this is really going to be worth it.

This is stupidly broad, but is there a chance a lot of the rubbers and plastics can be sourced from MC18's given they appear identicle?

I picked up my new rubbers from yahoo Japan plus David silver in the uk. Plastics are simply not there unless you manage to find used ones. Mc18 is different enough the plastics don't fit.

I too have just bought an MC 16 cheep. I was going to use the frame for F4 racing (150cc) but as most of the bike is there and it fits into into a Pre 89 race category, I'm wondering if I should get it race ready. I have the necessary skills but time is my only factor. It will need a complete motor rebuild.

Suggestions?

Cheers Wallace New Zealand.

Buy the mc16 through 21 manual from this site. Fwiw there is a set of 16 air box to carb rubbers on fleabay oz. for 16 and 18 models you can get parts there occasionally
