Another no spark question MC18 1989

Fri May 11, 2012 9:45 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey guys,
I love the NSR, being how rare they are in Australia when i sore one on ebay i didn't care that it didn't start i wanted it! Saying that i also payed a good price for something that doesn't start.
So i got it home tried to push start it, kick start it, charged the battery ect.
Was going to clean the carbs, but instead decided to check the spark first, the spark plugs looks a little old so i replaced them, and tried to generate i spark by touching the frame.

Stil no spark, so i took of the coils and checked the resistance 8k oms on both. And it all looks okay.

I was trying to find a way how trouble shoot the ECU but either i'm a bit blind or it's really hard with my crappy voltmeter.

I was considering to even try to swap ECU's maybe i could "rent" one from a wrecker or something, going to give some of my local's a call, would probably just tow the bike there and try outside their place. Just to eliminate the ECU as being a problem. But i heard they are fairly rare in Australia.

Was wondering if anybody could assist before i consider taking it to a proper machanic as i do not have a huge amount of time to really tinker with it.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

does your kill switch work? Check continuity from spark plug cap back to the coil, check continuity between battery 0 volts & the engine

I think you should find a similar bike that is running OK and try out your PGM on that bike.
Well that's the preferred way of doing it anyway.

I believe that trying out another PGM on your bike is the less preferred way of doing it as there may be something wrong with your bike that results in damaging a good PGM.

Make sense?
Just out of curiosity, what model PGM is it?

Makes a lot of scene...
Let me state some assumptions,
Because I brought it of the actually owner(had his rego details on the old rego note), the bike was running at some stage back when it had rego, which was 5 years ago.
There must have been some kind of issue that he couldn't be bothered fixing so he put it into storage thinking he'd fix it, usually they are easy fixes.
It's sad the owner "can't remember" what happened to the bike as it would be easier to figure out what's broken.

I don't really know anybody with a PGM-II so i've really got no other choice but to buy another PGM-II, unless a Sydney NSR rider want to lend me a helping hand?

Hey guys,
I manage to have a poke around with a volt meter.
And it seems like there is half a volt(0.415) running into the coil of the spark plug when turned on but there is no surge when you kick it over, as i'm guessing there should be?
Could it be a motor timing problem or should i go have a look at another PGM2?
