Bought a Mc18 recenly, someone is having a good look at it, including power valves and carbs but when it is done in about a week I probably need to do a plug chop. I've already done the splice. It was idling uneven with the left pipe puffing way less than the right and the left also letting out a lot of black when riding a while, am trying to make the call for the airbox, any advise still available for mc18?
If it's healthy inside, you will find that most NSRs tend to smoke a little more on one cylinder than the other when first started. However, black smoke sounds unusual. Excessive blue smoke is usually a badly adjusted oil pumo, and white smoke a good sign of a RHS crank seal possibly starting to fail (burning transmission oil). Black smoke could just be carbon burning off the insides of the expansion chambers if it's not been ridden as Honda intended for some time!
Check the jetting as per the tables in the Tech section, but please be aware specific jetting discussion is not allowed in the public forums. _________________ Andy.

Thanks Andy, sorry for being unclear, the black stuff is actually what seems to look like oil/fuel, wish I had your mile long straight for the plug chop, might just jump on the freeway, at a spot with a nice uphill and at the right time it might be quiet and police free, If I manage I'll let you know, till then I probably need to unrestrict the air box since I have already done the splice, is it safer perhaps to drill less holes for a start, thanks for the info.

If the jetting is stock, it's most likely an over-enthusiastic oil pump!
I'm re-writing the Tech section at the moment, and will update it shortly with revised oil pump setting information for the various models. _________________ Andy.

Got my bike back today and on the odd 100km stretch home it went like never before! Thing that was hindering the most was the dirty carbs, powervalves are fine, compression down a little but not seeming serious, it really displayed power that didn't dissappoint. I think I'm gonna wait a bit before doing the airbox. One issue not resolved is leaky fork seals, anybody got a good set of front shocks they are willing to sell and post all the way to SA?
