After a top end rebuild/general clean & service I have a question about the oil pump.
I have read a few related threads on here including the recent one so I'm confident I have the oil pump/throttle set correctly.
I have done the following:
1. oil tanks were taken off and cleaned
2. Filled with Castrol Power which is green (the previous oil was red)
3. Bled pump by opening bleed bold until fresh green oil comes out.
4. Disconnect oil lines from the carbs and blanked off the inlets
5. Put some 30:1 premix in the tank and start the bike
6. Give it a heat cycle i.e. rev up to about 5000 until at operating temp (10 - 15 mins)
I expected to see the fresh green oil come out the oil lines within this time but not much came out at all.
Even by opening the oil pump manually all the way it only puts out a drip every 1.5 - 2 secs. It's still a kind of dirty brown colour which
I assume is the new oil mixed with the old.
So I guess the question is, is this normal? I'm kind of freaked out by how little oil the pump delivers and I'm scared to switch from the
premix until I'm sure its ok.
Also, am I right to keep running premix through until I see new green oil come out the oil lines?
Should be fine. The pump doesn't really pump that much oil.
As long as it's an even amount coming from each line all will be good.
I run premix because when I did a manual test of the oil pump, 1 line had twice as much oil coming out as the other. I probably could have flushed the pump with diesel but I don't mind premixing as it's just a toy and not a sole means of transport.
If it makes you feel better, run on premix until it's all green but i doubt it would matter. You won't be thrashing the motor on run in anyway.
If you do the maths it ends up being something like this:
Assumptions: **
Lets say that in top gear at 6000rpm you are doing 100km/h
And lets say that you travel about 15km per litre of petrol at this speed.
The oil pump delivers oil at a ratio of approx 37:1.
At this rate you cover 15 km in 9 minutes and use 1 litre of petrol and approx 27ml of 2-stroke oil.
This works out to about 3 mls of 2-stroke oil per minute.
And that is just 1.5 mls/minute for one cylinder.
So now you are hopefully, not so....

**The assumptions are not 100% accurate but are probably within about 10%.
Al, just remember to drain your premix from the tank, hopefully you didn't put in allot because you cannot just add oil to your petrol without changing the jetting....

I used the tank from my RGV as it runs premix anyway. The NSR tank is away getting sprayed in Rothman's colours. _________________ Cheers....
