Have a bit of a read around the site, heaps of info. I'd start with the basics - do you have spark on both cylinders? New plugs might help.

Check your coils, clean all the electrical connctions - search for how to test coils there was a really great thread with lots of pictures just recently.

Pull the carbie's off and note the jetting. Give them a really good clean.

Test the compression and search for leak down tester if you want to check the seals are in good condition. Hard starting is a sign of a dodgy seal. There are lots of threads dealing with how to check out the crank seals.

I'd do this before jumping into a rebuild. That being said, a new top end would not go astray, especially if you don't know when the last one was done.

Cool! Good luck, once you have a go they are not too difficult to work out. And yes, some of the members on here have forgotten more than most of us will ever know!

Not too sure about the availability of new cranks, but StephenRC45 will be ya man to rebuild your old one. I think he can do it to MC18 spec.

Are you sure it's rusty? Some of the crank webs are "rusty" coloured!

We can rebuild cranks, but bearings are in seriously limited supply now. We have 15 in stock, 9 are spoken for (pre-paid), and 2 sets are for our own cranks. I will be ordering more next week; probably the last remaining stock in the world... until we find some more tucked away in a dark storeroom somewhere!

No, it's not. The MC18 R5K/R6K crank is particular to 1989.

Left hand crank cases often fill with water and rust that side of the crankshaft.

mc18sp terra

Sun Dec 30, 2012 11:52 am » Post: #15 » Download Post

Hi,
i have taken the engine out of my mc18sp terra today and it looks to be blowing past on one piston as there is alot of black staining on one side, i have also noticed that the power valve has some play in it more so on one side then the other. the crank web on one side has some light pitting from rust aswell and the compression is low on both cylinders!
I am going to rebuild the top end new pistons rings ect but i have also sourced a mc18r engine and i am thinking of swaping the crank and any other parts that i may find need replacing, can anyone give me any advice as to whether this crank will be compatible i am not sure of the year of this engine.
