Thinking it seized - but it didn't. Gearbox problem?

Fri Jun 10, 2005 3:37 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Yesterday I rode my Honda NSR SE/SP on its first day assembled in the US. Everything was fine for the first hour or so but then, with no warning, the bike began to die as if it had an electrical or ignition problem. This happened as I slowed down to a stop light. I tried to keep reving it to keep it from dying but my efforts failed and the bike stalled out.

I didn't hear any snaps, cracks or bangs, but I can no longer turn over the motor with the kick start, which makes me think it seized.

Also when I push the bike in neutral there is more drag than normal and I think I hear the clinking of metal parts rubbing against each other.

I haven't had a chance to look inside the cylinders for problems. i did do an archive search, but I didn't find anything exactly like this. Is there any hope that it could be something else and not a seizure?

if your pushing it in nuetral, and there is drag, then I wouldn't think the crank, or top end has anything to do with that.

Since being in nuetral means the wheel is not driving the crank/piston, but is turning things in the gearbox, I would wonder what is happening in the gearbox.

Did you check your gear oil before running it? Was there any in there? How much? How new?

When you try to kick over the bike, can you not move the kick starter, or does it not actually fire (but the kick started goes through the motions).

I would drop your pipes, look up in the exhaust ports to inspect your top end and check your gear box.

I forgot to check the gear box oil, and if there is oil in there, its probably pretty old. The kick start will not move at all. I'm thinking now that something happened to the gear box. Should be interesting to figure this one out once I start to open things up.

Update -

Bike did not seize. After taking off the gear box cover and disassembling everything, I turned the motor over by hand with no problems. I then put the gear back into place and the kick start worked again. Bolted everything back up, got the bike started and rode it for 5 or 10 min.

Then - Same Problem!

Bike began to drop revs, stalled, and the kickstart froze in place.

Clearly there is a problem with either the flywheel, the gears, or the crankshaft sprocket getting stuck.

Anyone been in this "bind" before? Any suggestions? I'm stumped. I couldn't find anything strange in the gear box - although I should say I have never seen an NSR gearbox before either.

Thanks

Adam

Is it possiable you are getting a partial siezure? A friend of mine had a similar problem on an RGV250 but he was doing 130mph (well topped out so what ever that is) and the back wheel locked for an instant but then every thing was fine again...it did this 3 times, and he found out that the plating had worn out beyond its limit.... but hey it could be a completely diffrent thing. worth a look,
I have a complete gear box from another bike in perfect condition, its a spare for my 21, if you want to send pics of your BIts (oh errr Laughing ) i can have a look to see if they look worn or broken compared to the box in my garage, Hard to do with pictures but if your really stuck might be worth a try..

Don't be fooled by the after-effects of a seizure ... I had a huge seizure which messed up the cylinder and destroyed the piston ... the bike kicked over and ran almost fine after that. I thought that it must've not been a seizure, but the loss of compression made me take a look and sure enough ...

Thanks for the replies. I took apart the gearbox again and this time crank WOULD NOT turn by hand. Well, it moved a little but not a full turn. If the crank is frozen, then the kickstart can't move either, so my logic has this pinned as the problem.

I think I may have a bad crank bearing.

I pulled the motor out this morning and will probably start opening it up on Monday. I figure at this point I might as well rebuild it.

I will be getting to know the NSR quite well it seems.

Bad news mate, but at least the world will have another NSR expert. Never a bad thing... Wink
