Fri Jun 10, 2005 4:38 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Did anyone run bike with Tyga's ss pipes on stock MC21 without jetting or re-jetting carbs?

If yes how was it, was it ok or there where any problems???

Dont do it..its not worth it. It will end up costing you a hell of a lot more than a jetting session will.

I did for over six months on my street bike. The pipes were the only mod I made to the bike. Ran fine. When I switched the air box, I jetted the bike for that.

thanks,

Come on Charles, you should know better than that! We can't ever condone changing something as drastic as exhausts without then checking the jetting.

We've said it before, and no doubt will say it again:

EVERY BIKE IS DIFFERENT. YOU MUST CHECK THE JETTING AFTER ANY MODIFICATION, JUST TO BE SURE!

Charles, you must be damn lucky. As a new convert to the NSR I swapped the pipes over, didn't rejet, and siezed two miles up the road.

Remember children, just cuz it worked for him, doesn't mean it will for you!

I've had GP pipes on my 100% bone stock 28 for 3 months now with no problems.

Matt said it should be fine if theres no other mods.

Ah but the MC28 is different to the MC21, and is heavily restricted elsewhere. The MC21 has a large part of it's restriction carried out by the exhausts...

I did mine on a 21 Smile

hey, just cause it worked for me doesn't mean it will work for Dave. I'm thinking it was living on the California coast that made it work for me Wink

Thanks,

An MC21 has very little restriction in the stock exhausts, infact the best MC21 ive ever tested still runs stock pipes and makes over 65bhp! I have not been able to find any pipe yet that betters the stock MC21 for power or midrange. The only reason i run race pipes on mine is because they are lighter.

Eh?

All I've ever heard is that the stock system is very restrictive! Hence the reason everyone whacks on aftermarket stuff.

Why did mine sieze then, when it was running fine on standard? Is it the cans which make the difference?

At a trackday my racepipes were banned due to noise regs (Castle Coombe) and I had to stick the standard ones back on. It ran so rich it wouldn't pull past 9000...

Enlighten me! Confused

lol Dave, youres wouldnt pull passed 9k even with the race pipes a few days ago Wink

A race system doesnt always mean you automaticly have to go richer, my tyga pipes i infact had to drop 1 main jet size smaller than stock to get them to run right.

Bill who uses stock pipes for racing is always up over 190m/j though and always has to drop them when using his racing gibbsons, which of course make less power and torque but do over rev alittle better.

As for the stock honda cans, after market ones do help alittle. On back to back runs a set of race cans pick up around 1.5 to 2bhp over the stock cans and seem to need alittle more fuel.

The best set up we had with Bills was stock chambers, swarbrick cans, no air box, hrc jet kit and wire splice made just under 66bhp. Not bad for a stock motor. Even my 18 made 60bhp once it was set up right with stock cans and chambers.

I changed the pipes (not TYga) on the MC28 and it needed no jetting changes. Same for ignition derestriction. Didn't have to rejet until I started messing with the airbox on the MC21, otherwise same story.

Better get in here I s'pose.

Andy's got it right of course saying that every mod should be jet tested. Better safe than seized. Rich motors fould plugs and that ain't a big problem.

We've found that TYGA's thrown on a totally stock NSR generally don't need a jet change. This is probably because in stock mode the NSR's already sucking as much air as is possible because of the little pea shooter holes in the airbox. Always worth checking though.

Make any other mods such as airbox or ignition and you will need to rejet.

Weather conditions and altitude make huge differences to carb settings, so don't expect my settings to be perfect for you, unless you live next door.

Remember. Cold weather or high pressure needs a richer setting than a hot day in summer with low pressure.

The boys here laugh constantly when we go Super Motard testing. There's only me running a real bike (CR500AF). Everyone else is on boilers, and they're always very quick to point out clouds and changes of wind direction 'cos they know I'll be back in the pits juggling the brass.

S'funny......last year riding the boiler saw about 3 carb settings throughout the season, whereas on the 500 I'm changing settings three times a session. A bit of a headache, but it's going well enough now to p**s everyone off, and I'm getting bored of hearing that 500 strokers should be banned from the open class.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrring ding ding
