Can you help identify this fairing?

Fri Dec 07, 2012 7:39 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm in the middle of building a Spencer 250 rep on an 18 I and have this front fairing unit.

I was pulling parts of to start sanding and noticed that the headlight unit has a custom fitting bracket, certainly not a factory job.

Can someone identify what I have, is it just a jerry built replacement? It's not a race fairing as there are mounts for the indicators, but it does look like the headlight hole was hand cut, not formed with the plastic fairing?

Any detectives out there?

Neil

I am possibly completely wrong here but,..

I have a vague memory that the NSR250 front headlight was deemed too small to meet ADR specs back in 1989-90.
ADR stands for Australian Design Rules,.. again very vaque memory. Link
But I think I can remember some special Australian Edition NSR's came out in Australia with larger headlights to get around this law.
Possibly, that is what you have. Maybe the Australian Honda importer did some modifications to get the bikes legal in Australia?

I just looked into this a bit more.
The MC18 R5/6k has a headlight that measures about 11.5cm x 7.5cm in frontal area.

ADR 46/00 Headlamps, section 8 states:
8. STANDARD HEADLAMP

A headlamp shall be deemed to be a standard headlamp if it
8.1. Satisfies the above-mentioned requirements for approval;
8.2. Has an effective diameter of not less than 160 mm;

The area of a 16cm diameter headlight is about 200cm²
The area of an MC18 headlight is about 85cm²

Measure up your light. I'm guessing it will have a frontal area very close to 200cm²

Perhaps the ADR specs have changed over the years, but you get the picture, right?

I measured up the light, its 160 x 100. and yes I see that the MC 18 is smaller than the 16's.

The bike has a plate from Aiken's MC and says its a MC18, 1989. Doesn't say when it was imported here (Aust) however. So they must have done the modification to get it registered, doesn't look factory but it's not a bodge either.

So I guess your right with the answer.

Thanks Neil
