Sudden loss of spark

Sun May 05, 2013 5:55 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Just had a weird one. Flat in 5th, shut off to break and the engine stops dead. Nope I didn't hit the kill switch, nope it didn't seize or even nip up. What happened was the sidestand light came on (which it did do previously without anything happening), and no the side stand was still retracted.

So my questions are
Should the sidestand switch cut the ignition when the bike is in gear (I suspect it does)
If the switch is faulty, can it be faulty in 2 ways,
the side stand retracts, leaves the warning light on, but doesn't cut the ignition or
the side stand retracts, the warning light goes on/off and it does cut the ignition
Is there a bypass option or does anyone have a working sidestand switch ?

Cheers

Pretty simple work around, work out if it is normally open or normally closed with the stand retracted (open circuit or closed circuit).

If it is normally open (no circuit) then just un plug it and take the bike for a ride to test. If normally closed (you have a contenuity across the switch) then bridge the plug with a piece of wire on the loom side, and take the bike for a ride to test.

Thanx Greggo

I should add, that I have ridden it before with side stand retracted and the light on, and had no problems !! The same the other day, just it has never actually cut out on me before, regardless of light on or off and side stand retracted or not.

Cheers
