I'm relatively new to this forum so my apologies for jumping straight into asking for assistance before introducing myself properly. Before I go any further, I just acquired an MC28 after owning an MC21 many years ago in my younger days. Always had a soft spot for them so when this came up the opportunity was too tempting. I live in Brisbane, Australia and this thing will be the bees knees around the excellent Mt Nebo / Mt Glourious / Mt Mee motorcycling roads nearby .
So I started cleaning the thing up to get it ready for registration and ran into a few problems I was hoping to get some assistance with. Firstly the rear end: I bought new chain / sprockets (standard gearing 15/44 with a Tyga rear sprocket) and cut the 520 O-Ring chain to 110 links as specified in the manual. I then looked at moving the rear wheel forward so I could get enough slack to join the chain etc (it looks like a previous owner adjusted chain slack with a large screwdriver which wasn't at all kind to the relative part of the wheel adjustment assembly but, apart from being marked up by where it was hit with a screwdriver, it seems to be OK). The wheel moves forward but then seems to bind up somewhere before I can get enough slack to join the chain (the wheel won't move any further forward and won't turn once it binds up). On the slider on the rear right hand side, there appears to be at least 1cm of gap left for the wheel to move forward but it's already well outside the green zone which I am assuming is the proper adjustment range zone. Am I missing something here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure it must be something obvious I'm missing.
Secondly, I removed the left rearset to give myself some room to get in and clean up around the front sprocket and because I want to run some aftermarket rearsets. The end of the gearshaft where the rear set ties in is bent. Do I need to take the engine out and/or split the case to replace the gear shaft or can it be done in situ?
