fairing change question for MC18

Thu Oct 30, 2008 10:08 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello,

I have an MC18 R2J. I'm thinking of changing the fairing. Can I put a MC21 fairing on my MC18? Thanks.
Also, how about the fuel tank? Can I change it to MC21 model, too?

The MC18 frame is considerably narrower than the MC21/MC28. Most things can be made to "fit" something else, but not necessarily fit well or look right!

I've seen MC21 bodywork on an MC16 that looked like some kind of schoolkid's bad Transformers project, and I've seen an MC21 with an MC18 fairing stretched over it that actually worked really well! There are better options than trying to bodge the wrong bodywork up though in my opinion.

thanks for help.

Also it doesn't pull very well in 1st and 2nd gear.

Needs more throttle opening? Or because it's too old?

Better to start a new thread, and to also be a bit more specific!

Please do not fragment the information available in a search by covering more than one topic in a thread.

Bodywork

Fri Oct 11, 2013 1:42 pm » Post: #6 » Download Post

Hi all,

This is my first post although I have used the site quite a bit whilst rebuilding my box of bits into a MC16. I was going to buy a MC28 kit from Hong Kong or Australia but reading here leads me not to bother as it's much wider. Will the MC18 fit the MC16? Has anyone tried to fit modern fairings? This may be an option as I'm not bothered about originality.
I'd like to add a photo but it doesn't seem to be a matter of just inserting one!
Thanks for a great website.

MC18 bodywork should be a relatively easy fit. The MC16 and MC18 frames (and subframes) are just about the same width. I've got an MC16, and an MC18 frame, in the cupboard, but no idea where the tape measure is... but they're close! Smile

You will have an easier time trying to adapt MC18 Mk1 (R2/4J) bodywork, as the fairing lowers are pretty much a direct replacement! The upper will need a new screen brace made, as it's significantly sleeker. You may have trouble getting the larger MC16 instruments in behind the MC18 screen.

The MC18 Mk1 tail is less cluttered than the MC16 underneath, but the subframes are easily interchanged. (I know this, as my MC16 has an MC18 subframe fitted, ready to take an 85-86 RS250 seat.) You will however need to remount the electrics, but again, if you can get the subframe, seat unit, and undertray, I expect it won't be a major job to adapt.

<edit>

Oh, and welcome to the forum, of course! Wink

I've got an MC16 with a lot of MC18 bits. The MC18 tail seemed to line up perfectly with the mounting holes on the MC16 subframe, but there were issues with fitting the tail light, and the undertray interfering with the tail.

I ended up putting on an MC18 subframe, which is a perfect fit. I've tried out the front and upper fairings from an MC18. But they didn't quite work. As Andy said, the upper fairing will not fit the MC16 brace (and the MC18 one can't be easily fitted), and I think there were also clearance issues with the MC16 oil tank. I can't remember if the issue was with the upper or lower front fairing.

Note: the parts I've tried to fit are all from an r5k MC18, the the r2j may be a different story.
