Hi,
The MC28 I'm importing from Japan has a black, non working screen which is a shame. The chap out there said they aren't being made any more so I'd have to find a second hand one or get broken one fixed.
I don't suppose anyone has got a spare screen module have they?
There's one on the Japanese auctions right now but I can see me getting outbid for it.
Has anyone fixed one of these screens?
Here's a couple of pics of my new bike. It needs tidying up but that's part of the fun.
The bike will be going on the boat in the New Year, so I should prepare in getting it registered. The lady at the DVLA said I'll need to show proof of year of manufacture. The chap in Japan says very few auction bikes come with paperwork so the year of manufacture can be established by reading the dates on the brake cables, which are generally made the year before the bike is made, which makes this bike a 1995 bike.
Does this all sound normal process to you guys? As it seems a bit weird to me. I don't really want to have a Q plate on my bike. The frame numbers are all present and correct.
Any help with the dark art of importing bikes would be appreciated.
Hi Rich.
Can't help you with your speedo issue I'm afraid but I can tell you you'll need to get the year of manufacture from Honda. They'll want the chassis and engine number and then Honda UK will apply to Honda Japan to get the details. That's what I had to do, can take a while as I'm told by my Honda mate the dept in this country is only small and deals with many cases. I seem to remember the fee was £30. Once you know the YOM you can get it MOT'd. You can get insurance on the chassis number for a limited time, you need that till you get the proper reg number.
Go to the DVLA fully prepared and you'll be laughing, the DVLA v55/5 form will give you a list of all you need.
Good luck
Eggsy.
Sorry cant help with the display, (Maplins or CPC digital replacement) but how did you manage to select and then buy the bike, thought it was 'closed' auction type thing, with registered dealer/trade/local people only?
Hi mate. If you look at the parts manual on this very site, you will see the frame numbers listed for each model of bike. There should also be a sticker on the top rail of the rear subframe which lists the codes for the bike - ie model code and paint codes. In your case, assuming the plastics are original, it should be an R2R which is the 1994 year model. Not sure if that will be of any help for the DVLA?
Hi there,
since in the governments infinite wisdom to close all DVLA offices last week to save money, it is no longer possible to MOT on vin no,insure, and produce an approve agents word in a letter for dating purposes, the only letter now acceptable by DVLA is from the Honda motor co in Slough, you cant take the bike to your local office for inspection nomore,
It gets worse the government have introduced a new system that every imported vehicle non EU from now has to be registered on the nova system, {notification of vehicle acceptance } The importing agent must prove the duty has been payed to this shower and when proof has been accepted , then cert is issued and they will reg the vin no on the nova system and then an inspection of the bike isn't required,
The punter then mot,s insures, and provides the Honda dating letter, + photographic ID,£55 reg fee,£30 od tax and posts it down to Swansea and hopes for the best,
I is becoming extremely difficult to reg a vehicle without these requirements and it wont be long before imported bikes and cars without it are for dismantling only, so make sure importing agent has done his homework for you in his contract,
I hope this helps fellow NSR owners looking to import from Japan or wherever,
jonmac,
Thanks loads for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.
I used Trade.co.jp to buy the bike for me. I've bought RGV parts off them for years. They have the Spectrum auctions, so that's how I got bidding on my MC28 and other bikes. I had to put down a £350 ( or Yen equivalent) deposit to get on the auctions.
I'll be picking it up at Southampton so will pay all the duty down there.
I have a photo of the frame number so I will try and get the ball rolling while the bike is still on the boat.
This whole process of registering seems a bit of a minefield.
I'll jot down the process and the pitfalls I find along the way and hopefully it helps others out.
Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it.
I wrote to Honda in Slough asking if they'd give me a year of manufacture from my frame numbers so I can get an age related number plate and they replied within a week!
My MC28 goes on the boat from Japan on25th January 2014 and will take a month to get here. It's costing about £530
I have to use a shipping agent when it arrives at Southampton to take it out the crate and sort my tax out. I don't know how expensive they'll be.
I accidentally bought 2 sets of second hand digital displays. One I bought on a Japanese sort of Ebay broker called jauce, but then my exporter guy bought one on my behalf, so now I have a spare.
Bought a workshop manual on jauce. It'll probably end up about £100 by the time I paid postage and tax. Quite a lot for a book.
