The lower fork tubes/sliders were corroded below the clear paint. I didn't like that and wanted them to look like new but I did not want to polish them.
So I removed the clear coat with a paint stripper and then started to sand the tube with grids 150, the 250, then 500. One of the pictures shows how little round these tubes really are, it took me several hours and a few sheet of sanding paper to get them truely round.
Finally I used strips of 3M #7447 (maroon) hand pads to get a beautiful looking finish which is very similar to the original.
I was wondering whether anybody has had theirs repainted or anodized. The way they are now the surface will probably need regular treatment with the 3M pad.
gepe.
(The final result is even better but I forgot to take pictures before I sent the fork for service).
Man, they look sweet, top effort.
One of the NSR i've got the previous owner resolved the problem of marks on the fork legs by covering them in adhesive fake carbon fiber plastic.
God only what i'll find under it when i peel it off.
I remember telling the previous owner if i brought the bike i'd be "ripping 'that s**t off" and he gave me a wounded look.
I should put a pic of it up so we can all have a laugh, even if it is mine now.
I just had my fork legs Wet Blasted for the grand total of 25 bucks and I've got to say I'm very happy with the results. I'm undecided on whether to clear coat them. At this stage I'm going to use them as is and see how the finish holds up. Photos attached.
I followed same path as gepe a few months back.....didn't have a wet blast shop nearby and didn't feel up to shipping them. I opted not to reclear coat them just put a good coat of wax on them. I figure they are now cleaned up enough that any future issues can be addresses with some aluminum polish.
You're a genius, i completely failed to notice that, even when actually looking at it, as soon as i read your post i went back and looked at the pic and it was immediately obvious.
Not sure who the bigger idiot is, him for his nightmare mods or me for buying it?
Still, i 'have' a bike, where as he 'had' some money.
