My facelift project

Tue Jun 17, 2014 4:16 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Here's a quick summary of my mini facelift project

Having completed every mod I wanted to my NSR MC21 Maxton suspension F/R new bits and bobs all over the place, VHM heads, Tyga rear sets HRC stuffers, hi flo reeds, HEL brake lines. So where next. I respray was way too expensive and I wanted to preserve the original fairing.

So off to China, well DHGate.com actually and I found a Repsol replica with screen for £140 with free P&P I thought for that I'll give it a go. I just wanted a facelift not some spotless 100% accurate replica. Import duties was £30 (about 20% for the VAT) and for that I got a seat, mudguard faring and screen. I was really lucky with the tank as this is the original colours, but it does seem to match up to the Repsol colours

The Finish

I was really surprised, the finish is quite good, if a bit thin. It doesn't take much t scratch it down to the primer. It doesn't appear to be lacquered. Stickers are plentiful, not perfectly straight, but OK. There was one word that was spelt incorrectly, but with some random stickers I had you would hardly know where the "cover up" has occurred.

Quality

Is adequate. The ABS panels are thinner than OEM but more flexible and IMO better than fibreglass. What do you expect for that price

The fit

It fits together fine when you get it out of the box, and most of the holes line up. I bit of work with a dremel and drill and fit it loosely no problem

Fittings

There aren't any, but a bag of M6 button SS screws from screwfix, a bag of 60 number plate bolts from flea bay, a couple of speed fasteners I had lying around, and it all fits together on the bike

Overall impression.

I love the finished article, and for £170 and a bit of effort I really enjoyed my facelift. Bearing in mind this is still the original profile and not a snoopy nosed TYGA conversion it's just what I was after.

..ditto!

That is what I am doing. I've got a Chinese set of 'Noodle' panels and am going to put the originals in storage.

I'm actually quite impressed by the quality of the panels although I haven't fitted them yet.
