I've been searching for a decent MC21 recently, and after having seen a few rough examples, I've been offered an SP I like the look and sound of. I've seen a lot of photos and it does look very clean.
Its a late model MC21 on an L-registration, has a dated certificate for a 1994 and here is where I'm confused, the owner has given me the frame number and it begins with MC28!
Any idea why it would have an MC28 frame? It's got an MC21 swingarm, bodywork and all the trimmings etc.
The HPI check has come back clean, but it's not had an MOT or tax for almost three years. I'm trying not to be too paranoid about it, but I'm loathed to travel to the other side of the country for something that might not be what it's advertised as.
I appreciate that something that is 20-odd years old will have been modified or altered a little over the years, so I guess what I'm asking is, do you think I've got anything to worry about with this odd frame designation?
Check the frame in between the headstem and the box of electrical connections. If there is a rectangular cutout with a circular hole to the triple clamp stem instead of the normal braced and cylindrical headstem shape then it is most likely a MC28 frame. Post a pic up and it may be easier to tell you.
To answer one of your original questions, why would this happen?....It's a 20yo bike, many things happen over time and a single sided swingarm is considered more valuable to some and the bikes are ratted for parts.
the old frame could have been damaged ,and the owner bought the best frame for the money at the time
it doesnt detract from the bike in my eyes but some people it will !
if your well into it and its an investment id be on the lookout for an mc21 frame ,just to make it right
no one would ever know anyway except an expert on nsr's
once you have got a frame sell your 28 frame and get your money back ,
good luck with it, if its in good condition change it if not ? its your choice
also a bartering point with the seller !
good luck with it mate !
still not ridden mine yet ,
