Seat unit confusion.

Sun Jun 14, 2015 6:35 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Ok before i start making up some mounts to fit the seat unit to my 21 which i suspect to be silhouette and possibly MC28 from what i can make out from pics of other 28's could anyone say for sure this is a 28 fitment seat unit? and if so will a 28 subframe fit a 21 and still allow use of the 21 undertray etc?

Going from memory the 21 & 28 subframes are identical except for one bracket which I think is for the different rear brake reservoir. The mudguard/under tray does differ very slightly but again should be interchangeable, I recently fitted a 28 under tray to a 21 with no problems.

However a 28 subframe isn't going to help you as those forward mounts on the 28 seat unit attach to cast lugs on the 28 main frame. Plenty of people have fitted 28 seat units to a 21 so someone will be along to give advice but I would suggest fabricating and welding some brackets to your 21 subframe.

Ah i see thanks for that, i can fabricate some brackets for the front mounts thats not a problem i just thought if the 28 subframe has the mounts it'll make for a neater job.

The seat unit is actually a one-off, and is a hacked NSR500R tail-piece, blended into an MC28 race seat.

TYGA used to do little adaptors to fit an MC28 seat to an MC21. Have a look on their online shop... they might still be available.

I've seen an MC28 seat on a 21 before, they fit on, but there is a gap between the seat and the tank due to the different shape of the 28 seat.

21/28 subframes are identical as PaulG said, besides from the rear brake reservoir.
