newbie exhaust question

Fri Mar 16, 2012 12:16 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I want to take off the stock exhaust to derust/paint it. Wondering if I need to take any precautions with any gaskets/seals or is removal and install a no brainer? Tried searching but just came up with lots of stuff on aftermarket pieces.

Thanks

Hi
It's a bit of a 'no-brainer' really...Only done it once though. Use normal tightening procedure. It would probably be a ver good idea to use new 'seals' but they are quite expensive at around £18 each. Best to do the job properly though.

If you are careful, the exhaust gaskets can be reused a number of times. You can gently open them back up a little with a large blade screwdriver, but be careful that you prise them open only a little way, and do it evenly.

You can also use a very small smear of high temp exhaust sealant on them. It's not something you need to do often, so resusing them a couple of times is no big deal.

And yes, they are very expensive for what they are!

Cheers! Looking forward to cleaning them (and removing the carbon buildup with drain cleaner) and smacking some nice fresh paint on.

I used to work a bit on cars but motorcycles (especially two strokes) are new to get my hands on. This site has helped me clear a lot of hurdles and am having a ton of fun doing basic maintenance on my NSR.

Thanks for the boost of confidence.

I`ve found the "exhaust" paint many auto shops sell doesn`t last long on 2-stroke exhausts, but you can get pretty good results with good old BBQ paint from the hardware store.

It will burn off too, but gives a good finish, and looks similar to OEM.
