Hi Guys,

I live in Japan and came across an NSR SE 96 model that has NEVER been kicked over and still has plastic on the seat and reads 0000 on the meter.
I can buy it for 18k. Not cheap, but I love NSRs and had one 20 years ago in Japan when I was 18 and 19 (actually had a normal one and an SP).
Anyhow, I just bought a 96 SE which "supposedly" did only 1700km. So, I got it from another place in Japan over the net and the dude said
it was in top condition etc etc and I asked if it ever had an accident to which he said "no". I get it here and I am no mechanic, but decided to get new tyres at a Honda shop who I am friends with the owner for around 20 years. They look it over and find that it must have been in a big ass accident. The owner of the Honda Shop called the shop where I bought the bike and said that he has to take it back. Long story short, all is good and I am getting a 100% refund.
Which brings me to my question to only people who are mechanically literate. I have found a brand new 96 SE NSR that has never been turned over. Still got the plastic on the seat. My bro said to be careful cause it could be full of rust. Is this true? I was told it might need an "overhaul"... is this a big job, expensive??
I know I have to get new tyres... but this part of the engine possibly been fooked is naturally of a concern. What should I ask for and what should I look out for? should I buy it on condition that there is no rust in the engine?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Is that 18,000 pounds sterling ?

Before even thinking of kicking that motor over it would new a complete disassembly and inspection.

Rings could be stuck to bores, crank seals knackered, bearings seized....and that is with no visible signs of rust.

Personally I would only buy it if I intended to do zero kms.

that is 18k as in 18 thousand dollars approx US. all up.

Thanks Greggo for your advice. I am weary thats for sure. I am getting opinions from different ppl who are mechanics and have a background which makes it all the more difficult.

$18,000 that about £2.50 , gotta be a bargin. Seriously though its not alot more than some dealers in the uk are asking. And in the price of an engine refurb its still reasonable for a zero mile nsr.

We've seen brand new RS250's that would've been older than this MC28, and they looked fine. Not sure you would've wanted to run them on the 20 year old slicks, but other than that, they've looked perfect!

Just check over and replace any critical perishable parts. Things like tyres, brake lines (we do stainless steel brake lines in the Marketplace! ), and possibly crank seals and fuel line.

I wouldn't worry too much! If you can afford it, buy it. The likelihood of finding another brand new one is so minimal, and I'm sure all of us here would like the chance if we could get it!

Try and work the kickstarter by hand!

Personally, I'd take the risk and just put some fuel in and see what happens (maybe some premix), give it a few kicks with the fuel/choke on to get some lube in there. Wake the beast up!

If you're going to buy it and ride it, theres a good chance you'll knock off a fair bit of the value you paid.

If you keep it as an untouched ornament on display, it will only go up in value.

I would buy it, leave it as is, and keep it untouched.

But i guess it depends on what you're buying it for?

I have some friends who are HRC mechanics. One who was Ito Shinnichi`s mechanic when he was riding for Rothmans here in Japan. These guys said it should be fine and it "may" need an overhaul. If so, Mr Ona (Itos Mechanic) will do it. Yes, will replace all rubber items and anything else it needs.
Yes, its true... if I keep it untouched it will rise in value over years. However, I am not buying it as a "financial investment" but a "mental investment". I could invest that money in other things and get a much bigger return if I thought of financial investment, but I get your point m8.
It will be a very very very well kept and taken care of NSR I guarantee that. Only ridden on Sunday in the dry. Keep Km`s low. Keep out of the elements. Always washed and waxed. It will always be a museum piece. I have no intentions on selling it. Ever.

I actually think it would be sad to take a bike with zero km's and ride it. There's plenty of bikes out there which look as good as new, and the chances of this hitting the tarmac and ruining it exist - even if you only take it out on sunny sundays...
