MC 21 Mixture

Sat May 11, 2013 6:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys looking for a little advice - I'm west coast Canada so a bit out on my own here.

MC21 with 19k km's. It's been parked for 6 years, just got it fixed and running after the oil pump dumped into the gearbox.
Rode yesterday, it seems to perform great, but...
144 km of gentle twisty
11L of petrol ( I was using 50% 94 octane car petrol and 50% 100LL Avgas)
0.14 Litre Motul 2 stroke synthetic
Temperature gauge never went over 85 in stationary traffic, and was 75 ish most of the time. Air temp was around 18C

If my maths are right I was thinking I should have used a lot more oil than that?
At 30:1 I was thinking 11/30 = 0.36 Litres.
Or looking at it the other way, using .14 Litre means my ratio is something around 77:1, which sounds like it should have seized.

On another note, the front cylinder exhaust can was hotter than the rear but I'm guessing that might be carb balance.

Am I missing something, or should I be as thankful as I am that is didn't seize? that's kinda why I added the Avgas, for the extra lubrication, just in case.

thanks for any suggestions
Chris

We don't really do jetting advice in this section of the forum, but it does sound like you're running a little rich there, which may be why its running cool.

What colour are the plugs? I'm guessing they'll be black and oily, rather than tan / biscuit and definitely not white!

Has the engine been modified in any way?

If you become a supporting member we can offer much more specific advice in the NSR open discussion forum.

Well you seem to know what you are doing.
1) Yes,.. the fuel:oil ratio should be close to 40:1
See this thread to check that the oil pump is set right.

2) And yes,.. check the carb balance to see if that's why the pipe temperatures differ.

For it not to have seized using such little oil indicates that it is almost certainly running rich,.. and just as well !!
Standard jetting is listed here.

Sorry for just stating the obvious, but it sounds like you know what you are doing and just want reassurance I guess?

An approach we applaud here at NSR-World! No need to wreck another motor for want of checking you're doing the right thing!

Thanks for the input, very much appreciated.
Ponied up for the membership here - well worth it. I guess it takes a manual permission for me to see the member forums..
Engine is standard except for a Posh Firm de-restrictor under the seat, and an oiled Uni air filter that I added. The filter might account for some of the richness I guess..

Plugs... hah, yeah I guess it was just a little rich....

And found a possible reason for the low oil delivery; as found when I pulled the tank off. Locktite is your friend I guess!

I'll check the carb balance, set the oil pump and leave it rich until I know the pump is delivering a bit more oil.

thanks again,
Chris
