Hello all,

I am new to all things motorcycle. Less than two weeks ago I brought home my first bike, a nearly immaculate M16. I'm trying to get it running smoothly again as it has been sitting dormant for some time. I know little about motorcycles in general, let alone the NSR. It's been sputtering and popping, as to be expected, but sometimes it won't start.

I could use some input on a few things---

---I'm looking for replacement ignition coils. I've found quite a few aftermarket parts, but can't be sure if they are compatible. Do they have to be make/model specific? Or would any made for 250cc 2 strokes work? The coils certainly look the same but I'm reluctant to buy until I know for sure...

---Does anybody know how to check the wiring harness? Specifically, that wire which plugs into the ignition coil and leads from...well...I'm not sure where it leads from exactly. I followed it back to a couple plugs, but I don't know which pin to check...

I've troubleshot each of the spark plugs and coils. They are working, if they are a bit weak. I would like to replace the coils and double-check the wiring harness continuity just to be sure.

Please forgive me, I'm so terribly new to all this and I don't know how to better explain the problems. I would really appreciate any input. I saw the link for the English maintenance manuals--that's my next stop. However, it's almost painful to have a beautiful bike that I can only stare at until I fix it.

I have used NSR 125 coils on mine and they work fine. You will have to modify the mounts slightly..a small hacksaw needed..but no trouble really.

Search the site for posts on wiring etc, and there are wiring diagrams on the site also.

I guess I could have introduced myself a bit better...

I'm an American, Navy, stationed in Japan. Two of the guys that I work with started getting into two strokes, so not to be left out, I got my own. I have never even ridden a bike before, but I always wanted to. I will only be in Japan for about another year before returning to the states, but I'm taking the bike with me if it's the only thing I take!

I'm taking a motorcycle course tomorrow and the next day, and if I pass I'll finally have my license.

Here is a picture taken right after my bike arrived. I bought it from a wonderfully sassy Danish friend who buys bikes at auction and flips them for a living. He gave me a very good deal and delivered the bike the next day, so we all had a cookout to celebrate. The other two in the picture are the guys from my shop.

You're in the perfect place to get the odd bits and bobs you need, so make the most of it while you can!

As Hobbit210 says, NSR125 coils can be used quite effectively, they are just a slightly different shape in the body. If using non-NSR250/MC16 parts, it's nice to still try and keep it all Honda.

There are full wiring diagrams in the English Workshop Manual you have ordered, and if you do consider becoming a subscribed member of the forums at some point, there are additional resources, including the wiring diagrams, in the Members Area available.

There's a huge amount of content on the forum and main site though, so that should keep you going.

This site has already tremendously helped! I really appreciate all the feedback.

Even though this is my first bike, I already have big respect for Honda. I'm doing my research (I read the bike history on the site too) and am starting to realize what a gem I managed to get. I want to keep this bike as true to itself as possible. After Hobbit210's post, I ordered Honda coils, they should arrive Monday.

I wish I spoke Japanese, and the moto-shops around here will only look-up parts according to make/model. Unfortunately it is my understanding (Japanese people are extremely helpful people and sometimes understand bits of English) that Honda has discontinued making coils for M16 specific.

You're absolutely right. I'm determined to find as much as I can while I'm here. It's also nice to find a wonderful group of enthusiasts who can help me learn.

Welcome Goldie and thank you for your service. I've been riding and tinkering with bikes for over 40 years, but only recently acquired an NSR. I can attest to what Andy says...there is a wealth of knowledge on this site starting with the moderators. Be safe. Eric from Texas.

Haha, sounds like my kind of people! I hear NSRs are not that common in America, glad you found one:)

Update: I finished the motorcycle course, so next week I'll be busy! I'm getting my license, registration and insurance, fixing the bike and so on. I was so excited to pass the test that I went to the shop, cleaned up the bike, and put it mostly back together. (Just waiting on those coils.)

I've been so proud having an NSR. I talk about it constantly! I think my enthusiasm is contagious...my buddy (the one with the Suzuki above) just bought an M18 project bike. The other guy (Yamaha) is seriously considering an M21.

The way things are going, I should be riding soon. I am so so so excited!

Being completeley impartial the Yam in my way of thinking is a better engineered bike.

That will be why, in 1989 they scrapped the reverse cylinder idea, and then went through about 5 variations of 3XV V-twin, to catch up with the 1987 MC16E motor!

The "Reverse Seizure" isn't a bad bike by any means, but it's no NSR. Any engineer can see the Honda is the superior design, by a long way. A design that remained largely unchanged for 10 years, and for 5 years in Grands Prix.

It wont take you long to realise 2 penneth worth of Yamaha, Suzuki, and last and most least Aprilia talk don't go very far on this forum, ever heard of pi**ing in the wind,

I could very well have rose colored glasses for my NSR, but after doing my research, this bike is superior for its time. I know Yamaha as well as other makes have come a long way, I also know any modern two stroke would probably own me on the track. However, Honda pioneered two stroke technology back in 1987.

I'm confident I have a classic on my hands. The fact that the guys are now tryin to get their own NSRs speaks volumes. My Danish friend will be here tomorrow (screw the typhoon, we're gonna work on our bikes!) and he's bringing spare coils with him.

Seeing as the only thing I can currently do on my bike is clean it, it's the shiniest NSR you've ever seen. Just tryin to show it some love and respect...

Wish me luck, I may be riding tomorrow at long last. It may be raining hard enough to blow me right off the road, but I wouldn't be happier....
