hi guys, can anyone help i have a 18 terra sp i brought on import this year apart from striping out the backend and cleaning it all up i have done nothing more. it start within half a dozen kicks but seems to run cold on one side and puts out unburnt fuel too. it rode ok in the summer and had the speedo off the clock. it has done high millage i think i may have to rebuild the engine . any advice would be great.
Have a bit of a read around the site, heaps of info. I'd start with the basics - do you have spark on both cylinders? New plugs might help.
Check your coils, clean all the electrical connctions - search for how to test coils there was a really great thread with lots of pictures just recently.
Pull the carbie's off and note the jetting. Give them a really good clean.
Test the compression and search for leak down tester if you want to check the seals are in good condition. Hard starting is a sign of a dodgy seal. There are lots of threads dealing with how to check out the crank seals.
I'd do this before jumping into a rebuild. That being said, a new top end would not go astray, especially if you don't know when the last one was done.
thanks for that advice i will have a good look round the site looks to be full of really usefull info and people that know alot about these awsome bikes, going to need a bit of help the last bikes i rebuilt were a ts50er in 1996 and then a 250 superdream that went pop on the way home from the lakes! now i have a nsr sp and a rgv sp to rebuild!! alot of work i think. thanks again
Cool! Good luck, once you have a go they are not too difficult to work out. And yes, some of the members on here have forgotten more than most of us will ever know!
can anyone help, i have taken the carbs and reeds off my 18 sp and the crank is rusty as an old hook on one side! i guess this is why it was only running on one!! can i source a new crank or can anyone tell me where i can get the crank rebuilt. will do the engine rebuild myself.
Are you sure it's rusty? Some of the crank webs are "rusty" coloured!
We can rebuild cranks, but bearings are in seriously limited supply now. We have 15 in stock, 9 are spoken for (pre-paid), and 2 sets are for our own cranks. I will be ordering more next week; probably the last remaining stock in the world... until we find some more tucked away in a dark storeroom somewhere! _________________ Andy.

cheers andy, i will have another look but i think it rust as it is rusty on the reeds to, also the bike has done 22k and was probably stood for a few years before being imported. so how do i go about getting the crank rebuilt?
i have managed to source a mc18r engine with the help of Dan Williams (fellow nsr nut and forum member ) and we are going to swap the crank and see if we can get the bike running again!i will keep you posted on progress, and thanks for all the help and advice.
Hi,
i have taken the engine out of my mc18sp terra today and it looks to be blowing past on one piston as there is alot of black staining on one side, i have also noticed that the power valve has some play in it more so on one side then the other. the crank web on one side has some light pitting from rust aswell and the compression is low on both cylinders!
I am going to rebuild the top end new pistons rings ect but i have also sourced a mc18r engine and i am thinking of swaping the crank and any other parts that i may find need replacing, can anyone give me any advice as to whether this crank will be compatible i am not sure of the year of this engine. _________________ "The full SP" MC18SP Rothmans and Terra, MC21SP Cabin,Pentax,Rothmans.
