MC21 and MC28 carbon tanks

Wed Feb 15, 2017 7:39 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

We are looking to have some MC21 and MC28 carbon tanks made which will be fully protected against ethanol. What we would like to know from you guys is who would be interested in them as they will be around £1300.00 each with filler cap. To get them done I would need a minimum order of 5 each.

not working again so ive got about 13 quid les Laughing looked into having one made by my mate, would be cheaper than that even without mates rates Laughing the expensive part is making the mould,as gavin has said, thats why you need a few genuine orders to make it cost viable.rich has had arseholes let him down after making the aprilia tanks Rolling Eyes

Just to pose a question others may have in mind.
If by chance you had commitment for a larger quauntity, maybe 10 off what would the likely cost be?
Sounds like economies of scale if tooling/mould is required.
Cheers Rob

price would change a little but not a huge amount. I need 5 to make it worth doing but would need more sales to cover all the costs of doing it so it would be a long term project for me to turn a profit.

Personally, I think an alloy fuel tank would be a better prospect.

Not quite as light as carbon (although the difference between the NSR500V carbon/alloy tanks is minimal), and easier/cheaper to repair if they are damaged. The alloy tanks can also be easily modified for quick fillers and breathers.

Just my 2p, for possible consideration.

Thanks andy always good to have other views. Alloy tanks are already available in Japan though for both models although they are a pretty penny to buy.

Yep. But nothing in/from Japan is cheap these days. Add to that shipping and import duty/VAT, and alloy Beater tanks become insanely expansive. Certainly worth pricing an alloy alternative, if already considering a carbon one.

The 2017 CBR1000RR comes with a Titanium fuel tank as does the 2017 crf450r mx bike. Super lite, super strong and super trick! Can't see it being cheap, but might be worth pricing if you are looking at carbon tanks.

Totally agree with Si.

Major manufacturer + titanium = economies of scale.

Alloy is the way forward, in my personal opinion. The major reason being as previously mentioned, that it's "easily" repairable if crash damaged.

I would look at alloy tanks but I do not have access to anyone that makes them like I do with carbon so only way forward for me is carbon. Last time I looked at getting a tank done in alloy it was close to £1500.00 and no trade disount

Yeah, appreciated. Was just putting my stick in to stir it up, because I've been too busy to do much of that lately! Laughing

Look at some of the guys that make motor cross ones, or classic race bike ones, i'm sure iv'e seen them advertised at around half that price Gavin. Look up a chap called Alf Mossell, an ex gp mechanic, an excellent fabricator who runs his own small business, but for the life of me i cant remember his company name, i'll have e dig and see if i can come up with it.
