Ducati Rear wheel on MC28

Wed Jan 27, 2016 2:50 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Andy; Matt from Tyga mentioned he acquired a rear hub from NSR World Marketplace for an MC28 (his cool Rothman's build) which accepts a Ducati Monster 5.5" rear wheel. Can you direct me how to buy this same part.
Thanks,
Tim
P.S never heard back regarding card and PGM reprogramming.

Rear shaft for Ducati 5.5" wheel

Sun Feb 07, 2016 2:27 am » Post: #3 » Download Post

Andy; I have my rear shaft ready to ship for the conversion to accept a Ducati 748 5.5" Rear Wheel. Hopefully when I do the conversion I can still use the Honda brake system? Who do I pay, and by which method, and what address do I ship to? As soon as I have the info I will pay & ship ASAP.

I would love to get the drawings and do this myself since I have access to an entire CNC machine shop.

Either way thanks for helping.
Tim
P.S Drew contacted me, so I am trying to get the PGM service done directly. Eventually I may purchase his knowledge and tools and start this service myself.

Nothing changes regarding the rear brake setup. As far as I am aware though, the Ducati wheel offset is different, so you will need to use a spacer to centralise (or, on your side of the water, centralize) it! Very Happy

We've looked at buying the reprogramming setup too, but there just isn't enough demand now to justify the investment. Probably why they are considering selling up.

We're based at:

Performance Engineering,
c/o GT Motorcycles,
10-12 Elburton Road,
Plymouth,
Devon.
PL9 8JQ
United Kingdom

*Not sure quite how united it is any more though! Smile

This would be an upgrade i would be interested in...

Talked with Paul at TYGA, there is a lot of shifting and shimming involved, but i am up to the challenge.

Will post my progress later

I believe Kontec are selling the tools on yahoo auction to be able to reprogram the cards yourself. I will see if I can find a link.

Ducati wheel on NSR

It is possible,

The center bore is 45mm, while the stock is 51. The added bonus is the Ducati wheel has a inverted taper end, which gives you more space to push the wheel out with a spacer.

I will snap some pix for you all to follow.

ONLY PROBLEM is when i push the wheel out, i loose the lip the wheel sits on. i am looking to make an adapter that will extend this lip, but presently i am tryin to get past step one. Get the wheel to fit the hub.

Making progress today...

We openned the rear mouth from Ducati Stock to 51.5mm
We opened the front of the mouth where the 45 degree tapered spacer sits to 46mm
We added an Alu Bushing so we may push the wheel out up to 10mm, We will do proper fitment and revert back
We are making a 10mm Spacer with 10mm long press in pin sleeves so when we install the wheel its as one unit and nothing breaks under heavy acceleration. Will find 10.9/12.9 bolts to secure it all together and then dash in the red loctite.

The spacer will have an OD of 120 and we will cut out slots for the nuts that hold the rear disc in place.

Pictures to follow next week...

NSR250R wheel is 4.5" wide, the Ducati is 5.5

Taking the measurement from the outer lip to the hub the Ducati is deeper by 16mm, Will remeasure next week and post my findings.

All my findings are very large for its always easy to go smaller and not so easy too go larger. I will mock up everything on the bike and then make all needed alterations. I hope to be around 4-8mm by the time i am really finished

We took several steps forward, but right now i am all stopped.

we have an offset of 10mm from the original line, but the good news is we have 3mm gap between the chain and the tire, the tire fitted is a 190/50R17.

I am hoping that a 180/55 gives me 5mm more clearance and we will shave the spacer down so we only have 5mm offset. I will then play with the swing arm spacers and sprockets to get the rear tire square with the front.

All in all i feel good about this, but everything i at a halt till i get my new chain slider. My original one fell apart

I have completed my lil job.

I have the ducati 5.5" rear wheel installed on my bike.

My issue was i needed a 5mm spacer to push the tire out from the chain.

I also mounted a 170/60 tire in the rear, as ppl suggest that a 160 is not wide enough to properly fit on a 5.5" wheel.

Took my bike out for a ride and have to say, it feels great.

Waiting on the chance i save up some money before i go for an upgrade to the front end and exhaust.

165/55 17 was standard fitment for the RS250, which ran a 5.5" rim.

Only slightly wider than a 160, but may have helped with chain clearance.

I have JUST enough clearance with the 170/55 and Narrow DiD chain. 2-3mm.

Will start to ride it next week once my new front tire shows up. Then for my hot summer months, i will upgrade it with Tyga parts. Just need to settle on an exhaust system...

Personally I wouldn't say that's anywhere near enough clearance.

Quite why you want to run such a wide tyre on an NSR250 too, is quite beyond me really. It's certainly not going to help handling. But each to their own.

Just be sure to check the tyre after some light use. Any "squat" under acceleration or heavier suspension travel will soon have that chain gouging out the sidewall. Seen it plenty of times.

Pretty much my thoughts, too.
