Tried to search without any luck, so was hoping to get some guidance here.
The tach on my MC28 SE has a delay when starting the bike. The needle doesn't move at all when the bike first starts, but will suddenly jump and start reading after idling for a few minutes. Also, the speedometer reads even while the tach isn't working.
You are not alone on this. My MC21 went through a phase where the tachometer would not work when first starting up in neutral. Once I put it into gear it would work normally. The temp gauge was also slow to register.
The problem went away after I started riding the bike more frequently so I can't give you a specific fix for the problem. I would be interested to hear from the more mechanically minded to understand what would cause this. Whether it's just loose wiring or whether the electrical system has any impact?
Unfortunately my issue hasn't gone away and a new, maybe related, issue has come up.
Now when starting the bike, tach still stays flat at 0 until ample throttle is given. However, I've just recently noticed that when I give it good throttle while idling in neutral, the speedometer will read random numbers. The speedometer is also jumping around while riding the bike. I'll be cruising around 50km/hr and it'll suddenly read random speeds and then go back to 50km/hr, then jump again, etc.
I've tried replacing the speedmeter pickup layshift (white piece on the counter sprocket) but didn't make a difference.
Solution - a friend lent me his bike to do some testing and despite my own voltages reading well, borrowing his R/R fixed the tach issue and his speed sensor assembly fixed up the random speed readings.
