NF5

Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:43 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I would say the NF5 which uses an engine developed from the road bike is the ultimate version of the NSR250 so what self respecting NSR enthusiast would turn down the chance to own one Very Happy

So when NSR World member Racer38 decided to sell one of his fleet the temptation was to much to resist and this time worn 91 version found its way to my garage.

Although the little RS is in fairly decent condition it clearly hasn't run for a number of years and was showing signs of neglect and age. And after drooling over the NF5 and NX5 rebuilds carried out by StNeots motorcycles and Tyga a full strip and rebuild is really the only way forward.

I hope to achieve a similar level of restoration as the previously mentioned StNeots and Tyga restos but within my limited resources and budget.

After the strip down I have decided to concentrate on the chassis first and once this is complete move on to the engine, so the only place to start is the main frame. As some of you will know these are not anodised like the road bikes so are subject to corrosion. Nothing to serious on this one just lots of small areas of pitting.

The only way to really get rid of this is by manual labour Confused I used wet and dry, scotchbrite, phosphoric acid and elbow grease, elbow grease and even more elbow grease Sad

I was quite happy with the result though, my personal preference is for a satin scotchbrite finish, really not a big fan of polished aluminium myself but each to their own Very Happy

Next up was the swinging arm. This was corroded worse than the frame plus it had the inevitable crash damage with the paddock stand bobbins ground away and a nasty dent caused by the rear set being pushed in to it.

This called for a little more ingenuity and after a bit of thinking I hatched a cunning plan Idea I drilled a hole in the dent and drilled and tapped a piece of mild steel the same width as the extrusion section.

I then annealed the dented area and used part of my blind bearing puller kit to pull the dent out. Simples Very Happy

It then went for welding and vapour blasting.

20181122_151610 by Paul Goat, on Flickr

20181122_151618 by Paul Goat, on Flickr

Cleaned the welds up and a good going over with scotchbrite and the result was better than I had hoped for.

This stage of any project is probably the hardest, cleaning and prepping parts ready for refinishing and assembly but when you start getting some nice shiny parts back things are on the up Very Happy Pre and post vapour blasting.

My you have been busy spending Paul, what you got from tyga?, I know they don't do a lot of nf5 bits, make sure you get their top fairing mounts. Have you had a word with Andy Sawf yet re cranks? Looking forward to seeing the old gal.

Hi Les, yes I have been busy spending, pretty much all boring stuff. All new bearings throughout, caliper seals, master cylinder rebuild kits etc, I want everything as close to factory fresh as possible.

The Tyga parts are the rear set back plates they manufacture for the NF5. Not spoken to Andy Sawford yet, will do soon I might buy one of their 92 NF5 seat units. They look a little less boxy than the 91.

Agreed... nice job on the swingarm. I'm sure I've got a really nice 91/92 NF5 swingarm somewhere that I was going to look at using on my 89 F3, but I subsequently found a MotoBum F3 arm.
