Exhaust Gaskets

Sat Jan 07, 2006 2:14 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Do these need to be replaced now that my pipes are off? I have just cleaned them and there was a whole lot of carbon packed in the gap within the metal ring - not sure if there was a rubber o-ring or something in there. Thanks for any advice.

p.s. Picked up a new (used) cylinder head for $20 so now just waiting on a rebuild kit from Tyga...

They can be reused if they aren't too compressed. You can usually use them a number of times over.

Don't worry, there's no o-ring that's supposed to live inside them! Smile

It won't hurt to use a little high temperature RTV sealant on them for good measure when you reassemble the exhausts.

RTV (room temperature vulcanized) just means it cures in open air at normal temps, this one claims to go to 300*c.

Because of the location, I think it is better to use a "high temperature" RTV silicone sealant. Here in the States at least, Permatex makes one that is widely available at auto parts stores. A moto-shop that caters to dirt bikes would also likely have something suitable. Hope that helps.

You guys have so little faith! Isn't that what the gasket is there for in the first place? If you look closely these rings look to be bimetallic Idea - I'm guessing the copper inner portion would expand under heat (more so than Aluminium) and produce a very good seal. Why put on extra sealant that just has to be cleaned off the next time you pull the pipes off?

Well, of course you may be correct! Honda never uses sealant on the gaskets, but then again they aren't re-using them are they?! Wink

If you use brand new gaskets, and the mating surfaces are as Honda intended, then yes, assemble them "dry".

I don't think they were genuine Honda ones then! The Honda ones are about UK£12 each! Rolling Eyes

That ain't cheap in my book, not for a bloody exhaust gasket!
