Coming to the UK... with bike?

Sun Nov 19, 2006 7:47 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all,

So I've got a job offer in the UK, just south of Cambridge... Couple of questions:

Anyone else ride around there?

How hard is it for me to bring my MC21 with me and get it registered in the UK? Is it worth it (SE, rebuilt, repainted, 24kms, would get around 1000 GBP for it here in New Zealand) or would I be better off just to buy one on arrival? Work are paying relocation costs so I figure I can cover most of the transport costs with that.

And finally... damn gearbox oil seal (output shaft) keeps leaking, have replaced it twice now - is there a common problem that occurs to cause this, maybe the breather being blocked?

Cheers

Nick

Bring it! I believe you can use it for up to a year on foreign plates (although that may be Euro plates) and the more over here the merrier!

Plus, you know it's history.

And concerning the leaky seal. Did you nick the seal when you refitted the transmission? It's easily done. Or sometimes you can knock the spring off the sealing lips which of course lets it leak.

Another thought is that the seal has been popped out by Neanderthal Man with a big jemmy and he's scored the seal housing, so the oil's seeping out round the edge. This can be fixed with some crafty use of Devcon if you don't want to go through the rigmarole of welding, machining etc.

I'm keeping a close eye on the leak, I only noticed when I had the fairings off to get repainted... it may have stopped. Still got gearbox oil so no it hasn't leaked all out!

Well the job is actually just south of Cambridge, in Melbourn, a company called PA Consulting. Looking forward to it although the visa might be a little trickier than I thought - I have the education/age part nailed but my past earnings are crap because I started a dyno shop here with a couple of mates and have been paying off the dyno rather than ourselves for the last 2 years! Might have to be a "working holiday" for a start... heh heh...

I'll look into that importing a vehicle, would be good if I can use it on NZ plates but I'd be surprised.

Cheers

Nick

Run it on NZ plates and play ignorant if you get stopped! Smile

Of course, "ignorance is no defence against the law", as they say, but in reality the UK cops are helpful if you are polite! (They get so much grief off tossers, that if you are nice to them, it usually completely throws them!!) Just blag it! Tell them you were told by the shipping company it was OK, and that all you had to do was apply to the DVLA within 12 months with the NZ registration documents, MOT (or whatever you use out there) and import doc's for a UK registration.

The simple fact is it may not be too far from the truth!

Just make sure you aren't stopped doing 45mph in a 30 limit, or something equally stupid, else you don't have a snowball in Hell's chance! Smile
