Everytime I put the bike in first gear after it's warmed up it dies. This is while giving no gas, if I give it a little gas it doesn't die but it seems pretty rough going in. All the shifting after the initial step down is fine, Any idea's?
Should put some on both ways.. Is it dry or wet clutch? Have you tried adjusting the clutch cable, once moving gear shifting is much easier because everything is spinning, so a clutch that is not fully disengaging can exhibit your symptoms. If it's a dry clutch you may need to check the metal plates as they rust without use and will exhibit this phenomenon.
Clutch doesn't have many miles on it, if it's dragging, I sure can't feel it.
It's a wet clutch & the oil level is fine. I understand that the gear changing will be eaiser when moving but when I stop at a light & have to put it in first, it's fine. The only time I have a problem is when I put it in first the first time after warmed up.
So when it's cold and running with the choke on it's fine? What RPM does the choke hold it at? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

-Start bike with choke on, no more than 4 or 5 kicks.
-Bike runs around 3-4k rpm for a min or so. I turn off choke after it will idle on it's own. Put on boots, jacket, helmet, etc. as bike warms up.
- I back out of garage with kick stand up, stop, pull clutch in & put into first. Bike dies.
If I give a little gas, it won't die but doesn't go in smooth.
It's almost like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way.
The thing I don't understand is everytime after this, I can put it in first gear while standing still all day long with no throttle & don't have any issues.
Thanks for the feedback.
It does sound like the clutch plates are sticking together overnight then. Not unheard of...
What oil, and level do you use? How old are the friction plates?
When selecting first, do you have the front brake on? Try doing it without and see if the bike lurches forward - a sure sign the plates have not fully disengaged.
Try pulling the clutch in two or three times before going for the gear. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

I tried pulling the clutch in a few times but it didn't seem to help. After reading a recent post I think I might be running too heavy of an oil. I have been using a 80w oil from Belray. http://www.belray.com/consumer/product.fsp?pid=13636 I've been using this oil for some time now. Should I switch to a lighter weight & see what happens? How will the small amount of old oil mix with new lighter oil?
I should be able to switch to a synthetic right? Should I put some lighter weight mineral base in, run for a little while & then switch to the synthetic?
Only if it says it's suitable for a wet clutch. The synthetic I use specifically states "not to be used in wet clutch transmissions".
I don't know about mixing synthetic and mineral based transmission oils though. If you mix them, then I would strongly advise a proper flush of the system.
Personally, I can't see why you would have a problem using the Honda specified 10/30W oil? _________________ Andy.
