hI folks, just joined today.Am seeking advice on buying an Nsr250.Would appreciate any advice on what model to go for? Reliability?Ease of maintenance? Price? Etc,Etc.Have previously owned Aprilia RS250(Old shape) and numberous Yam's (350lc's Tzr250 etc) So fancy an Nsr.Also are spares readily available?
Thanks for your time.Cheers Ian.
Hello and welcome, plenty of info here if you search but briefly in my opinion;
(dates and pics are in the histroy section)
There are no UK full power spec NSR's, they are all Jap imports.
NSR250 mc16 - 45bhp and hard to get past that, some parts very hard\impossible to get now.
NSR250 mc18 - 45 bhp, easily made up to 60bhp, some would argue the best of the lot, certainly the best engine for power, very similar to gp bike of the same era. Specific mc18 parts getting hard to find.
NSR250 mc21 - 45 bhp, quite easily made to to 60bhp, modern looking frame and fancy gull arm mean it handles as well as anything, engine taken straight from the mc18 and made worse. Parts in good supply.
NSR250 mc28 - 40bhp, a bitch to get made up to 60bhp, mc21 frame, single sided proarm, more electric toys than it needs. Just about all parts still available.
Reliability and maintainance wise as they are all basicly the same engine they're very similar,
Prices, they just get more and more expensive, mc28's are not cheap, watfordhorn only got £550 on e-bay for a tidy mc18, I got offered £2500 for my mc28 the other week and I doubt there's a second a lap in it between them.
Realisticly an mc21 is the best buy, but then again, realisticly a modern 4 stroke is even better. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
Thanks for the info. As for a 4 stroke. Never owned one.Gotta go ring -ding-ding. Just fancy a Honda for a change.Possibly an Mc-18. Cheers IAN. Excellent forum by the way.
I bought my 18 last year for the same reason. My first proper bike was an RGV & after various 4 strokes fancied something small, light & fun. Fancied an NSR as they were a bit different, only going for the 18 as i couldn't afford a 21.
The 18 was £250 off eGay...but i think it's cost me at least a grand so far!
Good luck with your search, but keep looking cos usually a few all come up at the same time! _________________ 88 NSR250 R2J (work in progress!) & 05 Aprilia SL1000 Falco
I live way up north in Inverness(near the loch ness monster!) so they're not very common up here(the monsters probably spotted more times than an Nsr) So am keeping an eye on evil-bay,biketrader etc. Thanks for the replies and info. Can anyone advise me on any problems with Nsr's.
Reliability and any problem areas to look out for when buying. Many thanks.Cheers IAN.
try and find one that is in as original condition as you can find as it will cost you a fortune to put it back the way it should be. i know as ive just done it with a 21

Most problems stem from either poor maintenance or trying to eek out anything over 60~62hp with just enough knowledge to screw things up... badly!
Do the minimal derestriction (i.e. wiresplice and airbox/jetting) and leave it at that unless you want to learn in depth what the insides of the motor look like!
Look after all the internal moving parts with fully synthetic oils. Check the RC Valves regularly for carbon build-up, and the cables for correct adjustment, as the weakest part of the bike tends to be the PGM (ECU) if not looked after.
The number of reported PGM deaths has dropped significantly over the last couple of years though, since this Site started barking on about how important it is to keep the cables/Valves in good condition! (At last... we've done something right!! ) _________________ Andy.

Come on, we don't know anyone who would do something like that do we? _________________ Charles Gallant
Theres a few home taught gear box mechanic's out there that have invented ratio's that even Honda hadn't thought of! You know who you are. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
I have got it working now,But it now has an R2J box in an SP motor so I need to find another SP box. I can now remove a gearbox in under 5 mins and refit it in under 10 mins so it been worth the pain as Iv'e learnt something ,something like dont try to invent your own ratios leave it to Big H
