My MC21 has had constant charge problems, mostly low out-put. I have a new reg/rec, battery and have replaced the stator that is known to be good. I ride the bike for weeks and months and as long as I don't use the headlight everything is fine. I have wired in a Dyna charge monitor which tells me high, good or low voltage idiot light. But once I turn the headlight on at any ridding RPM the voltage drops and the low light comes on. at idle it will go out. The bike test 13.9v at idle approx. and stays good at higher RPM if the headlight isn't on. The Dyna monitor is wired into the igniton switch live wire once the key is truned on and I'm note sure if it's just a voltage drop there. I have been told by a place that rebuilds stator that the electrical system is only design to keep the battery at min charge when a bike is running. I have tested many other bikes and never seen voltage go so low unless there is a problem. Has anyone else had any thing like this ? _________________
The bike should keep the battery at about 13.5 volts when the engine is running at anything over 2000rpm. No matter what you switch on, as it's the job of the regulator to keep this voltage constant.
If you have a fault however, which is shorting the live to chassis, then the alternator cannot provide enough charge and the system will drain. That's why there are fuses in the system to blow if this happens.
Either you have a faulty regulator - even new ones can be duff, or theres a fault in the wiring.
I'd check the output of the alternator at various revs, then the output of the reg/rect and see if you can narrow down the problem. _________________ MC21SP Plaything
