Willow Springs

Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:33 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm signed up for California Superbike School at Willow in October (14/15) and I'm looking at taking my Ducati and NSR. I live in south texas where its hot and humid at close to sea level and I'm wondering what kind of jetting changes I should consider for running the high desert where the elevation is higher and the air is dryer? After that I plan on spending a week in LA and want to do a couple rides. I'm currently running 128 mains but may need to go slightly higher for my local (currently with stock pipes and filter, and injection). I haven't really rode the bike yet so I don't know exactly how close my jetting is, but I think its pretty close.

Hey James,

Well, Willow is about 2500', I think and it's usually warm that time of the year. Not very humid at all. I am racing this weekend and it'll be 110 in the shade Sad

Anyway, I only know one guy that is racing an NSR at Willow. I can get his baseline settings, but I would plan on 2 sizes leaner and do the plug chops. Or just leave as is and go one step at a time. 128 mains sound fairly lean to me.

As for rides, I live in 91377 zip code. It's about 7 miles from the famous Rock Store and right on the Malibu canyons and Santa Monica Mountains. I would be happy to show you around and arrange a 2 stroke ride. I race the 20/21 of October, so as long as it's not then, we can have some fun.

Cheers,

Joel

Hey Joel, I thought you lived near San diego. I was in fact planning a trip to the Rock Store. My old Racing partner from Germany lives in Torrence now and we're planning a ride because he want to ride the Duc. I'll probably be on the NSR with Temp plate, assuming its still running after CSS. Otherwise I'll have to ride his harley, and that doesn't excite me. I have a wedding to go to on the 20th so no worries. Maybe I'll check out your race on the way ou of town.

If you would like to ride a little more south/east on Angeles Crest let me know.

I usually get together once a month with a small group of Ducati riders with a few other makes thrown in and ride Angeles Crest or Bouquet Canyon.

October is a good month for Willow and hopefully it won't be too hot.

Angeles crest was the other ride I want to do, but all my rides will be during the week. I might hit Ortega as well.

During the week is the best time to ride that's for sure.

The Crest, Rock Store and Ortega can get pretty crowded on the weekends.

A few more roads for you to consider are Azusa Canyon and Palomar.

When you do an Angeles crest run where do you start and end? I'm not too excited about riding in LA traffic so I'm thinking about trucking it to rendezvous point.

Also: where exactly is the rock store?

For Angeles Crest I like to go from the Lower Tujunga side.

Do a search on 10521 Sunland Blvd., Sunland 91040 which is a Coco's restaurant. Plenty of places to park a truck and unload. There are a few different ways to go up and around and back so I don't want to bore everyone I'll send you a PM with a map link.

The Rock Store Joel could give you better directions I don't go there much.

Ha ha... Coco's are still around? I figured they would have died with Sambo's

Angeles Crest is nice during the week. Palomar is phenomenal. When I go there, I usually put the bikes in the truck and drive down there, meet friends and unload. Anyway, as you can see, I have multiple bikes and we can have a go if your bikes isn't running.

It's mountain roads like Angeles Crest, and some beautiful flat lands with big sweepers. It is located near San Diego. Try google earth and check it out.

Cheers,

Joel

Yea Palomar is beautiful country down there.

I tried to get you a map of the Crest and they are all too small and you can't really make out the rode names. I know there is one somewhere.

No matter if you hook up with Joel he'll show you or I would be glad to as well.

It took a while to find it but Palomar is sort of east of Temecula.
