Front tire size on a MC21

Fri Jun 15, 2007 3:37 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm wondering if a 120 would/should fit on a stock 3.0 inch MC21 front hoop? I actually like the feel of the 110 tire but everytime I hit track days, the tire vendors only have 120s... So, since I'm still not sure a CBR F3 front wheel will bolt right on, I have to ask if a 120 will fit without problems/issues on a stock wheel or should I just stick to a 110 and look harder for suppliers?

Thanks.

Look harder for suppliers... You cant beat the stock size, the 120 will fit but you wont like the feel and there will be less of a contact patch... Try and sort your tyres out before you hit the track, Youll have a better selection...

Alpha 10's are good road/track tyre they replaced the GRP70sp or Bt090's or if you can get them i run with 209gps there awsome but very expensive!!

Best of luck!

Good to know. Thanks! So far, I like the Metzler Rennsports that's on my bike now (similar to Pirelli Diablo Corsas I think). Maybe I'll try the Corsas on the NSR next and just order early...

I'm hijacking this old thread since I found no other one with answers to my question and this was closest.

I have found really cheap slick tyres, but front tyres only come in 120-sizes. Rear tyre is no problem, can get 150/60 for 73€.

Which of the following sizes would give the best profile, theoretically speaking (since I probably will not tell the difference any way)

120/60
120/70

The tyres are Shinko 008 (http://www.shinkotire.co.kr/)

Hi I have just replaced the tyres on my MC18 Bridgestone BT56 120/70/17 & 150/60/18 with Dunlop GPR Alpa 2 110/70/17 & 140/60/18 and it transformed the bike making it more flickable and sharpening the steering though it might be just me as I have been riding my NC30 diesel. Very Happy

I'd go for a 120/70 even on a 3". It was good enough for an RC30.

Big advocate of standard sized tyres, and I doubt it is "just you". The only bike I've ever ridden that felt good on over-sized tyres was StephenRC45's F3, and that's only because (a) it runs HRC rims, (b) the tyres, although over-size, were hand cut slicks, and (c) the suspension is also HRC and set up properly!

I'd go for 120/70 too. I've tried 120/60 and it was awful. Slappety slap slap.

I run Maxxis Goldspeed 120/70 and 160/60 road legal inter type things on the road '28 and I don't give a rats what anyone says about std tyres sizes blah blah blah, on the road you can't tell and on the track it'll scrape it's pegs and fairing, seems OK to me

That's bollox!

I've ridden over-sized tyres on the road and it felt shite. What made Steve's work in my opinion was the way it was set up.

You can't tell me what I can and can't feel. I personally wouldn't piss on a brand new set of Bridgestones if they were on fire and the smoke was choking the neighbour's baby, yet plenty of people here swear by them.

Well, I will test these tires on track in comparison to a pair of Pilot Power in correct sizes.

But my guess is that the slicks will be equal or better in grip and maybe slightly worse in handling, but for a price of 140 € instead of 200€ I think it's worth it!

I have strong feelings on being told what I can and can't feel! But yes, I believe the stock sizes work very well on the street, and the bikes I've personally ridden have reinforced my personal belief.

Most people won't go to the time and expense with the suspension that Stephen has, and this has been reflected in the handling of those bikes who the owners think look cool with big tyres!
