while on a carbon fibre finding mission i came across a web site carbonology.com and they sell lots of things for me to spend money on(dam my carbon fetish ) and they sell kits for making small parts like brackets etc and was thinking of having a go i just wonderd if anyone has tried to make stuff from scratch before and how technical it is because i rate want a go as kits are only £30 but im no rocket scientist _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
im staying way clear of doing carbon bodywork ill buy that but i might get a kit and try doing a carbon bracket or a battery box would be good......... _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
It's pretty easy. Same as laying up GRP, but the carbon doesn't form anywhere near as well so you have to be more accurate with your cuts and keep at it. On the other hand, the epoxy takes way longer to go off than the resin widely used for GRP, so you don't have to panic. If the kit comes with a gel coat then you'll be churning out parts that look great. _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
the kit comes with everything mate so i might get one and give it a go i will start with something simple(like the missis) and they sell carbon rods i was thinking of trying to make a gear linkage rod or is that a daft idea? _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling

Oh... I was confused there for a second. You started talking about your misses, simple and rods. Was thinking you were going to make her a carbon toy or something _________________ Charles Gallant

This is a good website if you want to make your own carbon parts:

Loads of good info on here, the only difference between doing fibreglass an carbon is the cloth, technique and normally the resins are the same.
ive just been looking on there mate that tank looks fantastic and i might send for one of the kits next week and have a go its got to be worth the money and cheers for everyones input _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling

No the resins are quite a bit different. And a lot more toxic! Some of the good stuff yo uneed a decent respirator to use! _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...

The type of resin you use really depends on the application. On the work I have done I have used the same resins on carbon and glass cloth. The nicest stuff to work with is pre-preg, no mess and no fumes.
What parts have you made Max?
