Suspension

Mon Jun 30, 2008 4:34 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

After racing at Cadwell at the weekend, its obvious that the forks on my MC21 arent up to it. They are on the soft side, and one of them needs the bush replacing. Also they only have preload adjustment, which at the moment is wound fully in to try and stiffen them up a bit.

What mods or changes have you guys made to improve them? I've been down the Maxton route before and been pretty happy with their work, but I'm willing to try something else, even replacing them for something with more adjustment.

I have a CBR6FX rear shock in the bike which I'm quite happy with at the moment.

I would say you certainly want at least MC21 SE/SP forks, if not something better.

The MC28 SE/SP front forks are better than the MC21 SE/SP, but will require the MC28 (or any similar late-type Honda) threaded calipers.

All can do with re-working for our heavier western frames, but a good start with the MC21 SE/SP forks is 12.5W oil. One big issue with the MC21 SE/SP forks is the limited rebound adjustment. The adjuster is pretty ineffective to be frank, so needs a little tweaking to get it to work effectively.

HRC F3 forks look outwardly similar to the MC21 forks, but are much more effective. They are rather rare though.

By far the best suspension to use is NF5/NX5 RS250 (USD or RWU), if you can get it, and if you are prepared to pay for it. Ideally you want 1990~ as before that they have no compression damping. You will need to use 296mm disks with the RS250 forks though, unless you go pre 1989 (but then you lose some of the aforementioned adjustment).

Andy:

What's the difference between the MC28SE and SP forks? What are the outward signs of these differences?

I thought that the SE/P models shared all the same suspension for both 21s and 28s.

Cheers Smile

I'm in the same situation - can't justify replacement, so I'm keen to know if any of the professional suspension shops more expert than others at respringing and setting-up the MC21 forks?

K-tech did mine (mc28se's), but if you''re watching the pennies be aware they know how to charge, the bill reads like this;

£60 - modify, machine and fit 20mm kit
£221.28 - piston kit conversion
£12.50 - oil seal * 2
£11.36 - slide bush * 2
£12.40 - dust seal * 2
£55.32 - 8.0N spring * 2
£10.00 - 2nd hand adjusters (mine were siezed solid)

On the track it's about a million times better than I am and a huge improvement especially under braking where it was really squirmy before and it didn't like to settle when you let them off either.

It's a bit too firm for the road now.

I used MH Racing and was very impressed with the feel of the forks afterwards. Transformed is not an overstatement. Was a while ago now and can't recall the costs though...

Thanks for the info fella's.

My forks sound very much like yours were before your rebuild Fontyyy.

I've also had Reactive Suspension recommended to me, anyone used them before?

Maxton are still looking good, just because so many racers use them.

Just spoken to Gareth on the phone, sounds a top bloke, and gave lots of good advice. Looks like the forks are going to him! And he's pretty local, which is a plus.
