What's the stock clearance and what do you guys run on the small side of the scale and the big side.

Thanks.

Er, whatever it says in the parts manual! Cool

If you go to the crankcase diagram, and read the notes it gives the specifications...

Not too sure I'd run a clearance of under .03 having 4 point seized at over that. Personally I like to see the .04 gauge fit down there.

I don't have that info in my parts book, is that another one of those 21 only deals.

Also I noticed in that link it calls for the ring end gap to be 55mm with 65mm being the service limit.

In this link:

http://www.nsr-world.com/workshop/rebuild/page-4.htm

It lists the ring end gap to be 30-45mm with the service limit at 50mm.

Fonty thanks for the suggestion, this is the kind of info I'm looking for. I know you guys on the other side of the pond do a lot more racing with these bikes than we do here and a racer specification is usually different than the stock specification.

Does anyone know why the differences in the piston ring end gap between the two links.

That's quite a difference and I'd hate to have wrong info out there.

The spec in the Workshop is taken from the Honda Workshop Manual(s).

I didn't translate the MC21 & MC28 Parts Manual, so I can't tell you where that info came from.

Matt@TYGA wrote:On my race 28 we used to run an "A" cylinder with "D" piston for fast tracks (0.047~0.053mm) and a "B" piston for short tracks (0.039~0.045mm). The reason was that at fast tracks the engine could be held flat out for longer and the bigger clearance piston allowed for this with less chance of nipping up. The tighter piston on short tracks was at peak rpm for only a short time so wasn't a problem.

Something I've noticed about you guys is that I don't hear much about plating as a means to get the clearance. I've seen multiple posts like the one fontyyy posted with guys using an "B" cylinder with a mismatched piston to gain the clearance you're looking for. I see a lot of guys looking for good used cylinders to rebuild their engines as well instead of just having what they already have replated.

I'm having some cylinders plated right now and the reason I asked is because I can have them give me the exact clearance that I request. I'm not racing but for sure wring it's neck in the canyons as I ride with guys with liter bikes most of the time. That post from Matt is the biggest clearances I've seen posted so far even for short tracks. Dude knows what he's doing but I don't think I should go that big for the street.

I'm going to ask for .035 and see how it works out.

In my experience 2nd hand barrels are considerably cheaper than replates.
Added to that I've NEVER seen o.e. plating do this.

Wow, are you sure that was plated or just painted with chrome color paint. Laughing

Plating at one of the top companys here in the U.S. is $175 a barrel. For us to buy a used barrel and then have it shipped because it's probably somewhere else in the world is about the same. Plus a used barrel is possibly no better than what I already have.

Plated by Langcourts Rolling Eyes

It's your call, personally posts like this scare me.
